Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    New install doesn't work

I have an unlimited user A5 runtime. I have this installed on several of our networked computers with no problems. However, I am installing on a new unit, and whenever I call up a certain form everything locks up. I have done the installs myself on all of the machines and have never had any problems. This one has me baffled.

I even tried installing the full version of A5 to see if that would help, it doesn't.

    Thanks for your help.

My first thought is that the machine is goofy (technical term...sorry). If you don't have enough RAM available, Alpha could lock up and do other nasty things.

Check the system resources - if it's below 70%, the computer has way too many programs loading at startup. One of these could be conflicting with Alpha.

Make sure there is enough RAM (32 min, more is better), and at least 100 MB free on the hard drive.

      Scott:

When you first boot up the computer, and the boot up is completely finished, try hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL. See what's running in the background.

I had a conflict once with PTSNOOP.EXE, which is a TSR for cheap PCTEL chip based modems that are software driven. It was causing all sorts of issues on the computer, and a search on the internet revealed many such stories.

If there are a lot of programs loading, and Bill's suggestion to check system resources right after boot up is, say, less than 90%, try eliminating some of the programs that start at bootup. Like Bill point's out, I find that when I go below 70%, I start have problems with all the software that's running.

Keep in mind that network computers are often signed off, but not re-booted. Every computer in the network should be re-booted every 3-4 days as a minimum, as a lot of resources remain in use, even after the corresponding software is closed.

You probably already know this stuff, but it's the first things that come to mind.

        Craig,

Amen to what you said about rebooting every 3 or 4 days. I go one step
further. I have learned that many motherboards do not include an
automatic reset on ALL of the RAM when the sytem is warm booted,
instead they load all zeros in the first 64K. Warm boots are OK when
you have just loaded a device or some software so that the registry
will acknowledge it, but that is about all. On a routine cold boot it
is best to leave the power off about 20 seconds before switching back
        on.

        So much for warm boots,
        efs
