Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Where is it?

We have a report made from a set. When loading the report an error message appears:
    Error occurred parsing CALC->NAME expression
    SHIP_CODE not found

I cannot find a calculated field named "NAME" in relation to the subject report. There are other calculated fields in the report and they are listed.

The Invoice.set was checked and I could not find the calculated field or expression.

I tried to make a new report from the same set (Invoice) and received the same error message.

It seems as though the field "SHIP_CODE" should be "SHP_CODE", but I cannot correct it unless I can find the expression.

Off the top of my head, are there any calculated fields in the set's field rules?

      RE: Where is it?

      James,

Open the report in design mode. Select the Drag/Drop list and see if the calculated field is there. If it's not seen by clicking Report and then calculated fields, it won't be on the drag/drop list. If that's the case, then the field is on the report and Calc->Name was deleted.

At some point, you created the Calc->Name field and deleted it w/o deleting the field from the report.

If, on the other hand, you created a new report from scatch and you're getting this error message w/o having placed Calc->Name on the report, go to the set's design mode and I bet you created the link using the Calc->Name field.

      My thoughts.

The calculated field "name" is shown in the Drag and Drop menu. This calculated field has an error.

However, when choosing Report, then Calculated Fields the "Name" calculated field is not there.

I can correct the expression by placing the "Name" calc on the report and then making the necessary corrections. This procedure does not correct the original incorrect "Name" calc wherever it may be.

The calc field could not be deleted from the procedure shown in paragraph two above, because it isn't there. Is there any other place to delete a field of this kind?

        I'm going to bed!

          RE: Where is it?

          James,

---The calculated field "name" is shown in the Drag and Drop menu. This calculated field has an error.---Can you fix this error?

---However, when choosing Report, then Calculated Fields the "Name" calculated field is not there.---No and it won't be until you create it. A calculated field created for a form does not cary over to the report. The only calculated fields that do carry over are the ones created in the table's structure and defined as calculated in the table's field rules.

---I can correct the expression by placing the "Name" calc on the report and then making the necessary corrections.---"Can" meaning you can do it but haven't?? I don't know what you mean by "placing the "Name" calc on the report". Are you creating this field??

---This procedure does not correct the original correct "Name" calc wherever it may be---Is it in your tables structure??

---Is there any other place to delete a field of this kind?---There are only two ways to create a calculated field, either in the field rules or by the drag drop list; OK a 3rd way by selecting the Form, Report or label from the Menu and selecting Calculated Fields. There are only two places where the calculated fields are stored; again in the table's structure/field rules and in the menu drop down to the calculated fields. You must delete them from the table's structure or in the calculated fields box via the Form, Report or Label menu while in design mode.

            RE: Where is it?

I suppose you tried creating a new report already by dragging and dropping all the visible objects from the report in question. You'd have to manually recreate the calc fields, I believe. That's about the only suggestion I would have.

              RE: Where is it?

In response to your third paragraph, if I bring focus to the Invoice Report, and using the Drag and Drop choose the "name" calc field and place it on the form, then I can correct the expression contained in the "name" calc field. However, even though the report is saved and runs correctly at this point, the next time the report is initiated the error message appears and the report does not run.

Also, although the "name" calc field appears in the Drag and Drop, it does not appear when in design mode and Report and Calculated Fields are chosen from the Menu.

I have the feeling I am not explaining this well. You are very patient.

                Tom,

Yes, I have tried to create a new report from scratch, using the same invce.set. After placing several fields on the report and then print or preview , the same error message appears.

I even tried to create a new invce.set with all field rules deleted.

James, don't feel badly. It's very hard to describe these things sometimes. I recommend you consider posting the database here so we can look at it. Will probably be easier to fix than to describe (I hope). Just zip the entire database and attach it to your reply to this message.

If privacy of the data is an issue, or if the compressed size of the attachment is larger than 1MB, you may email it to me and I'll look at it privately.

                      RE: Where is it?

I see your problem. Open your zip and you'll see many of the tables are grayed out. This is because part of the table is in another folder. You begin some tables with Beta20 and some with Unzipped. The foilder you zipped is 'unzipped'. Thus all the tables' fields did not get copied or zipped.

You will need to move the tables into one folder. After you do that, see if that doesn't solve your problem.

I might as well bare my soul. Attached is the A5V1.02 program that I am attempting to upgrade to A5V4.5.

The report for the invce.set works fine in the V1.02 version. When converting to 4.5 the report "invoice" comes with the "name" calc error. As I mentioned before, the "name" calc expression show up in the drag and drop list, but not in the list of calculated fields displayed by clicking on Report, then Calculated Fields, from the menu(after the report is in design mode).

I think you'll need to redefine the calc field because there are some differences bewteen the v1 xbasic and v4.5 xbasic. that may have a part in it. I'll take quick look at the latest zip when I get a chance.

James, there are no report layouts in your attachment. You will have to put together a working model, that's intact, if we're going to be able to replicate the problem at our end. Can't help you with what you've uploaded here.

You've posted a vers. 1 database, which, of course, I can't open with vers. 4.5.
