Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Browse Refresh Problem

    I'm having a problem refreshing a browse. I have a button on my form in order to create a new record. When pushed, it does what it's supposed to do, i.e. call up a form, take input and return. But when it returns, the browse is not refreshed. Here's the code on the button:

    f=form.load("SalesInput")
    f.new_record()
    f.show()
    f.activate()

    tbl=table.current()
    tbl.fetch_first()
    browse1.refresh()
    parent.resynch()

    There is a filter running, which I would like to maintain coming and going from the form. The only way the browse will update, is when I enter it and up arrow the slide control. What am I doing wrong??

    Thanks!

    RE: Browse Refresh Problem

    Charles you probably aren't doing anything wrong. Search this forum. The question is asked and answered regularly. Look for a thread called 'Browse Refresh Challenge' (or 'Refresh Browse Challenge', I forget which) for a collection of answers, including an explanation for Dr. Wayne on why it's behaving as you describe.

      RE: Browse Refresh Problem

      Thanks Tom. I had to modify some code, but I got it to work. I think I've been working too long and it's starting to run together on me!

      Thanks again.

        RE: Browse Refresh Problem

        Argh..the old browse refresh problem. This is a tough one.

        I do a lot with embedded browses. Refreshing them is no easy task, but I have managed to do so on all of them. If you are accepting entry in a browse, I would suggest setting the order to record order, add the record, fill the record, then set back to the original order. To make the browse refresh, I use the quick_sort() method, as in:

        browse1.quick_sort(.F.)
        browse1.quick_sort()

        Have to execute both commands to get it to refresh properly.
        quick_sort() appears to cause an update of the indexes in effect immediately. It works lots smoother if the field being sorted is a keyfield.

          RE: Browse Refresh Problem

          Thanks Tom and for the benefit of the other avid readers of this forum here's what I did as an alternative.

          In the OnActivate of the form I placed the following code:

          parentform.fetch_last()
          parentform.fetch_first()
          parentform.resynch()
          ''parentform.index_set("sdate")
          ''parentform.find(cnum)
          parentform.resynch()
          browse1.resynch()
          browse1.refresh()
          browse1.fetch_first()

          I commented out two lines, because I didn't need them, but others might.

          On the Refresh button itself I placed the following:

          tbl = table.current()
          ''Make your own changes here...
          query.description="Incomplete Items"
          query.order="dtoc(sdate)+stime"
          query.filter = "compby = ''"
          ''End of your own changes...
          query.option=""
          tbl.query_create()
          tbl.fetch_first()
          browse1.refresh()
          parent.resynch()
          ''This code is extra and for kicks. If the Refresh yields no results you may need this...
          i = tbl.index_primary_get()
          count = i.records_get()
          if count = 0
          ui_msg_box("Warning", "No records found. Showing all Today's Records.")
          ''Insert whatever you'd like to do here...
          end if

          browse1.refresh()
          parent.resynch()

          Well, that's my thoughts for what their worth!

            RE: Browse Refresh Problem

            Wow!

            I appreciate all the work and experimentation that went into this. I have one browse, on a tab, that does not refresh when I come back from a dialog view. So I will be looking carefully at your script.

            Do you know if this process will be necessary with V5?

            Thanks

              RE: Browse Refresh Problem

              Tom,

              No I don't know, but hopefully it should be better. For the benefit of all I'll describe the application I was working on. We have a Sales group which adds requests to the database for processing by our Print room. Because the two departments are distant from each other, the Sales folks want to know when their requested work has been comnpleted. Sounds simple, but the browse refresh comes into play here. The Sales people want a browse on their screen showing their particular items they are tracking. The Print Room needs a browse which will show them whats been added to the queue in as real time as possible.

              In addition to the above, I added the code to the OnTimer event for auto-refresh of the browse. Now each group can either refrsh using a button, or can wait for the next auto-refresh.

              Maybe someone out there has an improvement, but in the meantime, it's the best way I've been able to find make work.
