Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

LF and CR in text box

I'm sure I've seen this before, but my search didn't turn up an answer. How do you put a CR and LF in a text box on a form?

    Ohlen, I think

    chr(13)+chr(10)

    will do the trick.

      Tom,
Tried that but I can't get the expressions to evaluate to a CR and LF. Instead chr(13)+chr(10)is printed as part of the text.

        Ohlen:

Are you talking about a regular text box, the type one might use on a form to label a field?

If so, you can't put a carriage return in one.

Please consider using a Rich Text Object instead. This allows both hard (by pressing the enter button) and soft ( by pressing the shift and enter button) carriage returns.

A soft carriage return line will not hold a place if the field or variable is empty.

Take a look under the hood of the sample invoice application. I think there are several examples in there.

          Ohlen:

I've been out cleaning the pond all day... and am a little more dazed than usual.

"A soft carriage return line will not hold a place if the field or variable is empty."

          really means:

A soft carriage return line will not print or appear if the contents of the line (field or variable) is empty.

Sorry for my confusion! I think this makes sense...

            Ohlen,

I thought you were talking about a ui_msg_box(). If so, this works well:

Ui_msg_box("Oops","Ohlen may have been talking about text boxes, not message boxes."+chr(13)+chr(10)+"Sorry")

              Hi Craig and Tom,
I'd pretty much determined that the text box could not hold a CR/LF combination. I had used a RTF previously; however, I was expanding the form to use at various screen resolutions and realized the text in a RTF does not expand. Hence, I was trying to use the text tool which will expand proportionally as you expand the form.

                Thanks Tom.
I've used this approach before in a ui_msg_box, but it appears that a text box is not "carriagereturnable". As a work around I created a box and placed individual lines of text in the box with a transparent background. Looks fine. Version 5's ability to copy the appearance of one field to many fields came in handy when I formatted the lines of text.
