Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ODBC and Paradox

I'm pretty new with ODBC, but I have to work with some attached Paradox SQL tables, I receive always actualized from a business programm, in a set.

When creating the set, I got the error message "memory corrupt - terminate operations". What does it mean?

After that message the set seems to work anyway at first glimpse, but the trace-windows shows a lot of messages like this (FSchrift is one of the Paradox tables):

    Attempting to read 'C:WINDOWSParadox5.INI'
Error: overriding syntax of 'AppendUnique' setting in 'C:WINDOWSParadox5.INI' with default; doeINSERT INTO %s ( %s ) SELECT %s FROM %s LEFT JOIN %s ON %s = %s WHERE ((%s Is Null))
    SQL: SELECT * FROM Fschrift

The problem might be, that the original table is in Paradox version 7.0, but Windows always only offers ODBC for Paradox 4.0 or 5.0 and I don't find any hint in the web, where to get an ODBC driver for Paradox 7.0.

Doea anybody know, how this all works and what I have to do? I appreciate every idea and help.

Hope that I could get it clear enough, because I'm German.

    Regards

    RE: ODBC and Paradox

    Frank:

I don't have the answer to your question. but I can raise an interesting possiblity. If I remember correctly, Paradox came with the ability to create data tablesin two different formats. Obviously the first one was Paradox tables [DB] but the program will also automatically convert Paradox data tables into DBASE tables [DBF].

I'm only taking an educated guess at your problem, but converting those Paradox tables to Dbase tables may solve your problem.

      RE: ODBC and Paradox

      Dear Robert,
thank's for the idea, but my problem is, that the business program creates Paradox tables and I'm not working with Paradox itself.
I have already transferred the tables into dbf, but that way I would loose the direct access and I would have to convert the tables all the time.

        RE: ODBC and Paradox

I don't think you can do ODBC operations with a set from Alpha. Or if you can, then I don't believe you can be sure it's reliable. Alpha Five's concept of a set is different from the way other databases ensure relations among tables. I believe to use ODBC reliably you have to write to individual tables. Remember, Alpha cannot directly write to the tables--it has to go through the Paradox database engine. It may be that Alpha is trying to override some of the Paradox database engine rules.
I'm sure you are also aware that some data types supported by Paradox are not supported by Alpha Five. You obviously can't use Alpha Five to update a field with a data type, such as "currency", that Alpha Five doesn't have.

        Good luck.

          RE: ODBC and Paradox

          Dear Peter,
I want to come back with a second question, you probably know an answer for. You are right, ODBC to Paradox doesn't work with sets, but it works with the individual tables.
So this will be a quite good solution anyway.
My actual problem is, that the table built via "Attach SQL Table" does not show the german vocals ,, in the way they are in the original paradox table, but substitute them by irrelevant signs. May be, the problem is in the ODBC driver or in the BDE from Borland, but it seems, that Alpha Five attaches the table by an own file called Paradox5.ini in the windows folder. That file is shown in the properties of the new table (with the tab "ODBC syntax") and starts with an entry like this:
Generic ODBC/SQL 32-bit Driver INI for Alpha Five Client/Server.
          ; Copyright (c) 1995-7, Alpha Software Corp.,
Do you know about an entry I have to make to get the special german signs in the right way (something like changing an entry for a language table to use)?
          Thank's for your help
