Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Beta question

I have been working with beta for a while and still can't figure out why I have so few selections in the insert object in the form. On one computer I have all kind of selections and the other one is so few. For instance I do not have the calender selection on both computers. I have copied the exact same build too. I have just downloaded the latest build 1102. What am I missing? This is wierd!

    Daavid,

Are you sure your seeing the recent beta version? Aa5 will not diecid on its own what to show you based on how it likes the computer.

If you are seeing the latest version, go to beta's properties on each computer and check to see how many field are there and/or the size of each version. They ought to be the exactly same.

      RE: Beta question

you should be choosing the static active x object.

this brings up a standard windows dialog for selecting the ocx control. if the control you want is not there, then you can select the option to specify the object by filename. choose this option and specify the exact filename of the object.

        RE: Beta question

Thanks for your response but I kinda dont get it. When I open up the insert object I am lost from there. I still dont understand why I am getting so many more selections from one computer to the other. Am I selecting something that windows has that I am using? Pardon me for my ignorance. Is anyone else getting the same thing I am?
I do appreciate your help Selwyn.

          David,

Did you find it? As Selwyn said,

Click on Object, NEW, Scroll down to Static Activex, click on OKAY and wait - takes me about 5 seconds to load.

There it is... Hope this helped.

Ok, I did as you said and I do not have that option. Like I said I dont have the same options as I do on my other computer. I was trying to get the calender control and it is not there. Am I losing my mind? lol

              David,

Again, check the properties of A5v5 on both computers and see how big they are. If one is smaller than the other, chances are pretty good that the smaller one has less files. Make sense?

Ok, now where do you want me to check the properties? Sorry if thats a dumb question. The one thing I did do was use the exact same A5v5 install. Thanks for your help.

                  RE: Beta question

You need to go to the folder in your hard drive which contains v5. right click on the folder, assuming there are no other folders within, and click Properties. The window which opens will show the file size.

What do you mean by, "the exact same A5v5 install"? Does this mean you installed from the same download, and that you did not download twice? If so, reinstall v5.

Also, did you download any of the other files?

                    RE: Beta question

Have you explicitly registered the Calendar Control? Just having MSCAL.OCX in the system32 folder does not make it appear in the ActiveX/OLE controls list.

Mine was probably registered on one machine when I installed VB6, but was not available on a relatively new machine with XP Pro installed.

Rather than install VB, I figured out that I could use MSWord to register it as a new control. Once I did that, it was available in the A5 list.

                      RE: Beta question

So what you are saying is that the calender for instance will not be an option unless I have Microsoft Word? On the machine that has Word I have it as an option. So, I just installed Word and now the option is available. Does that mean that someone has to have word for that to be available?

                        RE: Beta question

It has to be registered as a control, that's the way MS Windows wants it.

Perhaps there is a method (via regedit?) to allow you to register MSCAL.OCX without having to install something like MSWord or VB 6.0. Unfortunately I don't now how to do that, but will probably have to figure it out sooner or later.

                          RE: Beta question

You can manually register an OCX at the command line or at Start->Run with:

                          REGSVR32 MSCAL.OCX

Similarly, you can unregister one with:

                          REGSVR32 /U MSCAL.OCX

Wow .. that was fast. I'm glad it's straightforward. I did a registry search on Calendar Control 8.0 and found lots of hits in places I have no desire to visit unsupervised.

                            Thanks Lenny

I sure do appreciate all the help. I had thought that this was something that was included in Alpha 5v5. Anyway my next question is something of the future. In time I will be developing a runtime program that will include the calender feature. How do I get this to work if the customer doesnt have that feature in their windows?
