Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 DELETED MY SCRIPTS

What a piece of work this is. Just fixed one problem,
thanks to Jerry Brightbill, and now A5 has decided to remove my global scripts from the "CODE" folder.

Don't see any intuitive way to "import" them back (I have
a copy on the network), so I'll be re-entering my script code until/unless someone has a way around this.

Guess it is not that big of a deal (re-entering script code for 5 or 6 scripts), but the fact that A5 blew them away
really rubs me the wrong way.

    Thanks Alpha Software!

Never saw that happen, but you can open the good copy, open each script, copy and paste to a text document, open the app with the missing scripts, and create new ones with the proper names and paste the script into them.
    There can be only one.

If you have a backup - your alb/alm/alx stores your scripts, menus, functions & toolbars.

I seem to recall that Ira was working on a utility to copy stuff back and forth between databases. I think he was going to put it on sale when v5 ships. That might be just the thing for a case like this.

          Barry,

Have you compacted the database? If not, try that first.

            RE: A5 DELETED MY SCRIPTS

You can go to www.learn alpha.com and download the utilities I posted there last year. They allow you to copy menus, toolbars and scripts between two databases.

I'm a little embarrassed when I look at them now inasmuch as it was a "hurry up and finish job" but in the main they work well.

I am in the process of revising them right now and will upload the revision in a week or two. This will simplify the interface and the code and be much more user-friendly.

              RE: A5 DELETED MY SCRIPTS

Peter is correct. All of your scripts are stored in the database data dictionary files, the .alm,.alb. alx files. There are very few ways the scripts could all disappear. One would be if the data dictionary files are missing. This can happen if you have moved files to a different directory and forgot to move all of the files. A second possibility was mentioned by Bill. If the data dictionaries become corrupted, they might not be accessable. Compacting the database would correct this problem. The last problem is one I have encountered. If you have multiple copies of a database on your computer, it is easy to open the wrong one. I did this once, and wondered where all of my work went. Then I opened the correct copy and all was well.

I have a shareware program called COPYAPP that will copy any global scripts, functions, bitmaps, menus and toolbars from one database to another (as well as compare the two). You can go to

Thanks Ira, and to all others offering help. Will get back
later for better thank you's, and a final run-down of the
situation, ... maybe it would be helpful to others who may
come across similar problems to my most recent encounter.
