Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dead Field

I had to redo a form because of corruption. I copied a few fields form the old form to the new form, one of them is a 1 character field. It copied w/o the field name part and talk about embedded, it's stuck, pasted, welded, glued, etc. to the form. The field is so stubborn, it refuses to take focus, either by clicking on it or rubber banding it. I cannot move it but it does show a tab order and I can change that.

I deleted the field from the table but I'm still not able to delete it from the form. It is set to a tab stop but when arriving in the field, the db locks up, can't get out of the field or do anything except 'end task'. I drag/dropped the field on the from but still need to get rid of the old one. Putting it last in the tab order won't prevent a user from tabbing to it an locking the db.

Any suggestions on how I can delete it?

    Thanks,

    kenn

    Ken,

If you have a backup of your development project, just delete the table's dictionary files, and restore them from the backup.

If you don't have a backup... well that's another story.

Do I understand you to be saying you were copying fields from a corrupted form? If so, you're a braver man than me!

      RE: Dead Field

I deleted the table's DDD, DDM & DDX files, cut and pasted from a backup. NADA! Nothing changed.

I hate the thought of re-doing the form as there is a lot of detail. Hopefully anothere suggestion will save a lot of extra time.

Next, I deleted the SEM, SEX and SET, made a few changes to the form and all is back in shape.

      Thanks,

        Ken,

If a form is based on a table, the layout specifications for that form are stored in the dictionaries for the table, I believe.

In like manner if a form is based on a set, the layout specifications for that form are stored in the dictionaries for the set.

So, if your form was based on a set, swapping out the dictionaries for one of its tables should have no effect on the set based form.

I'm glad you got it going. -- tom

          Tom,

How right you are. Of all the things that v5 will have, my request is that it will be more stable when it comes to form corruption. A corrupted form doesn't happen very often but when it does, it's usually when I least have the time and on a form that has a bit of design intensity.

          Thanks for your comments,
