Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Klez.h

For the last few days I have been getting return email indicating that people are getting mail from me with the klez.h virus attached. I am also getting email from others on this board with klez.h attached who I'm sure are not aware that their email addresses have been hijacked.
Norton antivirus catches it but it's a pain. I read up on klez.h and this is normal for it. I don't have the virus, it's just someone that has gotten my email address from someone else but still....

I wonder if the open nature of this board is allowing someone to collect the email addresses and use them to distribute klez.h. Is this something we should worry about?
I like being able to email other posters so easily but not if it's creating a channel for virus distribution. Does anyone know anything about this?

I know it has come up before in the board but has only been a problem for me recently.

    RE: Klez.h

    Russ,

This is probably one of the most widely distributed viruses right now. I have 4 different email addresses counting my work and home addresses and each one has been hit. Two of them I use rarely and yet they have been hit a number of times. Because of taking good precautions, I have not been infected.

I think the only solution is to advise everyone to get firewalls and good virus software and scan regularly. At my work, the virus got past the firewall and infected our companies network and the IT department has been chasing it for weeks. Slowly, it is getting under control. But then a new virus will probably pop up.

          Guys:

Norton has a fix called fixklez.com - something like that[original idea for a name eh?]

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/ will get you to the area I'd attach it but they suggest that you download it directly lest it get infected while being passed around on the net.

                  Guys:

This morning, after reading the posts here, I again tried the URL I listed earlier as http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/

I WAS NOT redirected and it has all of the information about the WKlez and the removal tool download. What's going on?

To Russ: Thanks for the e-mail advice. Interestingly, when I replied to you at [email protected] I got this....

"......The recipient was unavailable to take delivery of the message
The MTS-ID of the original ..."

Geeeeeeez - what next with these viruses?

I got in through yahoo. I spent most of yesterday evening cleaing this thing up. When I got on this afternoon I had 25 e-mails and 23 of them were infected. Norton does catch it but it sure does slow you down.
                    Thanks for the suggestion

You must run FIXKLEZ.com before running your antivirus software. The klez virus automatically disables Norton antivirus. If you just run your antivirus software it might isolate the virus but it doesn't stop it. The next time you boot up it will infect more files. It is my understanding that it also reads your address book and sends itself to people on your address list. I was unable to clean up my computer(s) completely until I ran FIXKLEZ.com and then Norton Antivirus (had to reinstall Norton antivirus). Trust tis info helps.

                            RE: Klez.h

From memory I thought I posted www.sarc.com when this came up two or three weeks ago.

I had about 4 this week, but with Netscape they are easy to spot before opening them.

Switch to the VIEW SOURCE mode and it is easy to see the substance of the email is the virus.

A little way down there is always listed a BAT or an EXE extension file name then pages of code.

Be careful of that email which promises a site to get rid of the virus KLEZ. It says something like "click here to email me".
