Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Which is Best???

I know this isn't directly an A5 issue but I think I can stretch it a bit for this message board. I bought 3Com Office Connect 56k Lan Modem. I have 2 compuers, 1 w/win2k and 1/w win98SE. Which OS is best to set up as the server? the Win2k Pro or Win98 SE? Yah, I know, ideally, win2k.

But, here's the deal, the win2k machine has a 1.6 gig cpu but a 20gig HD and a combo CDRW. The Win98SE machine has a 1 gig cpu but a 40 gig HD and an Aopen CRW 1232 which is much faster.

If I use the win98SE as the OS, will the fact that the workstation has win2k be a problem?

I suppose, the server should have the the fastest cpu (but not necessary) and the larger HD and CRW. If so and it's going to be the win2k OS, then I need to switch HDs and the CDRW. Not the worst thing but I do want this set up right the first time and hopefully eliminate any potential problems.

Here's the stretch, it will no doubt help other newbie developers.

    Thanks for your input.

    RE: Which is Best???

Perhaps this is the answer. I just learned that I should set up the network as a peer to peer, neither one as a server. Although Win2k is meant to be a server, it will require additional license fees (UGH!!) By setting it up as peer to peer, either can act as a server or the workstation. (No extra lic fees {:>))

My goal is simply to use one computer as a backup and for testing a app to run on a network. If the app is set for runtime, it only has to get mapped correctly.

No need to map a drive. In fact, there are some that would recommend strongly against it. What we do in my office is start the application by calling the database from the machine on which it resides, as in:

      alpha5.exe alpha5machineca5mydatabase.adb

Of course, if running a shadowed copy, that command line would be changed.

All that is required is that the database source directory on the server be shared (possibly on the client, too, depending on how the app functions).

I have my son's computer and mine on a peer-to-peer network, and this has saved my butt on more than one occasion. There are a few things that simply cannot be tested properly on a single machine. If you have customers that have a network, I think your having one is a must.

By the way, you seemed concerned that your fastest machine has "only" 20 GB on the hard drive. I've been designing apps for nearly 10 years, still have most of them on my drive, plus I do a ton of work with images (big disk hogs), and I'm STILL only using about 8 GB. I don't think you have to worry about that!

          RE: Which is Best???

The concern of which machine should be the "server" shouldn't really focus on the cpu speed, but rather the I/O throughout speed. You could have a rocket processor, but if the disk I/O rate is slow, then you have a bottleneck. Make sure that your network cards are fast, and that you can actually push a lot of information through the wire.

          good luck,

          Tom

            Bill,

You're right and really, the more I thoought about it, the more I coame to the conclusion that with the machines on a peer to peer, it reall doesn't make any difference, who's on 1st, 2nd or 3rd. It should hit a home run most any time at bat.

            Thanks,
