Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Runtime Installation Problem

I just tried to load an application today on a friend's computer with Windows ME operating system. Once it was installed, the Windows directory was corrupted and we couldn't even uninstall the program. That application had been installed on my laptop with Windows 98 and there were no problems. It worked fine. After I got home I installed the application on my computer with Windows ME and had the same problem. Therefore, there seems to be some type of conflict created when an application is installed with the Wise Installer on a computer running Windows ME. Has anyone elso encountered this problem? Does anyone know how to correct it?

    RE: Runtime Installation Problem

    Hi Sylvia

I am not going to be much help here other than to say that I have installed runtime applications on ME & haven't experienced the problem the you have described. I am not using the Wise Installer, does it give you the option to not overwrite existing files in the Windows system folder? I am thinking that could be the problem.

"the Windows directory was corrupted" Does the PC boot properly or are you getting any file compatability error messages??

You can check the Install.log file for the runtime to see what files are written to the Windows System folder, try to extract them from the Windows ME CD & things should improve... As far as removing the application, back up the registry, then search for any occurances of Alpha (make sure the key belongs to Alpha Software) then delett those keys. Next delete the runtime folders & the application folder.

    GOOD LUCK Sylvia

Thanks, Doug. I will try your suggestions. I'm not sure what options the Wise Installer uses. I will check that out. I had assumed the problem was somehow caused by a conflict between the settings in that program and Windows ME.

The computer boots properly and I can still access programs from my desktop icons. However, I can't open the Start menu nor see the file names in the Windows directory.

Unfortunately I can't find my Windows ME CD. I'm sure it must be in my office somewhere because I haven't installed it on any other computer. The last time I used it was to install a new modem several months ago. Since Windows ME has a reputation for being problematic, I thought I might just bite the bullet and go out and buy Windows NT which is supposed to be more stable.

        Sylvia...

I don't know why you aren't able to use the start menu, but as for seeing the file names in the Windows directory, they may be all hidden by default as a safety precaution. If when you open the windows folder you see the standard menu at the top, drop down "View" & select "Folder options". The exact phrase may be different in ME but it is possible that the reason you see no files in the windows folder is because the folder options for that directory are set to hide all files.

If you open the install.log (located in the same folder where Alpha5 is installed) with notepad, you will see that the Installation routine that Alpha Software uses does not overwrite existing files in the Window System folder.

My best guess is that one of the *.dll files was overwritten by wise installer & the file that overwrote the original does not contain some function(s) that Windows ME requires. Below is a list of *.dll files that wise installer could have overwritten in the windows system folder.

          RE: Runtime Installation Problem

Thanks, Doug, but I couldn't find or read any of the files. I could only see the directory. This was not an installation of Alpha5. It was an installation of the runtime version and an application I had created. I was using the Wise installation program which I have been using with success for the last three years. I believe it tried to enter something in the Windows registry and somehow corrupted a necessary file in the Windows directory. Even the START button wouldn't work.

I did go out and buy Windows XP and installed it so now everything seems to be okay. There is no evidence of the files I installed just before the crash, though. Of course now this version is incompatible with my DSL modem, printer, and a few other things so there are more problems to solve. It never ends with these things!!! Hopefully I can download software solutions to take care of those problems.

Ugh! Lf I ever have a weak moment, remind me not to buy XP. Xp is supposed to be sooooooo solid and yet it's seems to be soooooooo incompatible. I'll stay with Win 2k pro. Thank you. (:>)

I know what you mean. Just get one issue worked oout and it causes another to goof up. Imagine what Selwyn's going through, working out the cause and effect, or is it cure and effect of bugs in v5?

I work with Windows 2000 and Windows XP. both test drivers for compatibility.

2000 sometimes will fail after the install on reboot.

xp normally before I get that far.

              Otherwise everyting works just fine.

Thanks, Ken. Unfortunately both the software and hardware manufacturers seem to want us to continually upgrade our programs and equipment. It keeps them in business. :)

I've got 2000 Pro at work and on one machine at home. The other machine at home has Win98 SE. Not one problem thus far.

Too bad they don't pay us for our time trying to make things run on their OS. Sylvia, send 'em a bill!!

That's a great idea, Kenn. However, they would probably be like some of my clients and ignore the bill.

By the way, my friend contacted Dell Support who told her to find a particular Windows file (a bit of challenge when the directories and Start Menu are missing)and reset the date and time to a point before the installation. She found the file and made that change. Now everything is back to normal. I'm going back tomorrow to reinstall the application but this time will copy the directories from a zip drive instead of using the installation program. I plan to do that on my computer first to make sure it works.

                    Life is continuing education.
