Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 crash during import

I have the trial A5V4.5 loaded on my computer. I tried to import an Excel file into A5. And A5 crashed. Hard. As soon as I select "First row of file contains field names" in the import genie.

I restarted A5 and repeated the same steps as before and A5 crashed again in the same spot. This kind of sounds like a bug to me, especially since A4V3 will do the import without any problems.

    Mike,

Perhaps if you upload a copy of the spreadsheet others can attempt to pinpoint the problem.

I don't recall any discussion or information on changes in the import routines in the upgrade from 4.03 to 4.5.

It's my understanding that import expects the Excel sheet to be formatted as Excel 4, and not more recent versions. Is that what you're doing?

      Mike,
I had the same thing happen to me the other day, I finally ended
up importing without using that option. I'm using v4.03 on a NT4.0
      sp6 OS.

        RE: A5 crash during import

I an using Excel 2000, but I saved the file as an Excel 4 spreadsheet prior to importing into Alpha 5 version 4.5. I also saved the file as a csv (comma separated values) file and encountered the same problem when attempting to import into Alpha 5.

Alpha 4 version 3 is able to import the file as is. I also have Alpha 5 version 1.0.2, which is also able to import the file using field names, though it wanted me to fix a few of the field names prior to import.

I am uploading the file with just the field names in it. This file is sufficient to reproduce the problem. I suspect there are invalid characters in the field names and this is causing Alpha 5 to crash. The rest of the file contains confidential information.

BTW, is there a more official place to report bugs? I haven't found any reference to one.

          Mike,

Using vers 4.5.266 I could import your asc file to a new table whether I specified that first row contained field names or not. I used the import genie each time. So, at least from here, on my Win98SE system, I cannot replicate the issue you are reporting.

            Hmmm...

I'm running the same version, but on Win2000. As a test I loaded A5 onto a Win98 box I have. A5v4.5.266 on Win98 will load the field names with no problems, but A5v4.5.266 on Win2000 crashes. Nic Marodis reported a similar problem with 4.03 on NT4.0 and had to import his file without headers.

So, how do I report a bug to Alpha Software? Does anybody know? I hope I don't have to pay for tech support in order to file a bug report. :-)

              Mike,

I'd send it to [email protected]

If you include the example and a brief explanation of the steps necessary to generate the error he'll be able to respond more efficiently.

He's also heavily involved in getting version 5 out the door, so there may be a bit of delay especially since you've apparently identified a work around, omitting fieldnames.

I had this exact same problem and deleteing the row of field names in the csv file fixed it instantly!

Was a lot easier to re-enter the field names later.

Are you using Win NT/2K/XP as apposed to Win 9x/ME?

Yes, I'm using Win2000 Prof and always have this problem when importing whether it be a asc, csv or excel file.

Hi again! Just found that if I checked the Titles in the csv or asc file and remove spaces (particularly at the beginning of the title it worked perfectly!

                      Might be worth a try.
