Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Removing information from the Title Bar

Does anyone know of a way to remove the reference to the open table on the Title bar. We can change the title, splash screen and icon. It would be nice to be able to remove the table refernce for use in distributed applications

RE: Removing information from the Title Bar

    Bob,

Window_title is a property of the System object A5. (You can see it in the Xbasic Explorer).

    Try:

    :A5.window_title = "Anything goes"

    in your autoexec script.

As always -- Tom's response is correct for the A5 window.

If you want to change the table name on the form's window you have that option in the 'Window' tab of the form's properties. Just type in the name in the 'Caption' window. I noticed that sometimes the 'Caption' field name is greyed, however, you can still enter and save your window name preference there.

RE: Removing information from the Title Bar

        Tom:

I want to totally remove the table (.dbf table name) from the the very top bar:

Alpha 5 Icon - Alpha Five - [Customer.dbf: Form View (Form Name)

I can change the icon and the title ie. MyIcon My App. I want to remove everthing after that. I don't want to display the database name and form name.

        Any ideas???

RE: Removing information from the Title Bar

This gets tricky. If you specify the form window title in the form's properties, when the form is maximized, it will show the window title as:

          Alpha Five - [YourFormName]

If you try to specify the form's window title using XBasic, it will not give you the results desired.

            Tom:

Thanks. I didn't think it was possible unless I got way down in the code. Maybe someday that will be an option similar to -Title, -Icon, and -splash command that are there today.

I just think it would cleanup my distrubuted application so that only what I want on the title bar is there.

You mentioned Xbasix Explorer?? Where is that and how do I get there?

              Tom:

Placing a space " " in the Caption field in the the Window properties of the form will remove the reference to the table and form name. It still leaves the [] on the title bar but that may be better than nothing. It presents a cleaner form view.

              Thanks for the help

                  Guys:

I tried it with just a space issued from the spacebar - no characters at all. Saved that and only the white Alpha Icon shows - no brackets - no characters.

                    Bob,

Another idea is to use the window title bar to display the path to the current database. I use this
in some of my applications, and it's helped me unscramble things a few times when my customer has gotten his or her folders and paths mixed up.

                      Tom,

Not directly related to the topic of this thread, but....

At the top of all my forms and menus I include a pseudo path (Main Menu > Students > Update Grades) with an arrow graphic for the '>' and the current item (Update Grades in this example) underlined as an aid to my users. That way they can tell how they got to where they are.

                        Hi Tom

This works only on the first page that gets opened on this case the control panel. After that if if you then open a form you then get the Alpha icon text Alpha Five and the form name in sqaure brackets. How do you lose the Alpha Icon and text on all forms from the the windows bar?

How do you lose the Alpha Icon

Use your own icon as in:
                          -icon="path & icon name here"

and text on all forms from the the windows bar?

Form properties/windows/window style/caption and type something (enter a few spaces to get a blank title bar).

                            Thanks Peter:

No problem with the Icon I use it a lot. However the form properities still leaves the brackets [ ] visible if you put a space in there but it is cleaner.

                            Thanks again for you input
