Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 v4 not closing

All of a sudden I am having problems with A5 (v.4.03, buile 230) not closing completely when I exit the program.
I did make some changes to some of my forms, but wouldn't think that should affect the program not closing completely.

If I "ctrl-alt-del" it shows that it is still open.

    Any ideas why?

    Carol:

Do you use XBasic? Any chance you used A5.HIDE() anyplace?

Another thought... Try opening A5 with a different app, perhaps the sample app, and see if you have the same problem. This will narrow it down to an app problem, or an A5 problem...

      RE: A5 v4 not closing

      Craig --

It is just happening with one application (database). The other one I use it does not happen.

I did make some changes to some of the forms so they would be maximized when I opened them up (per someone's instructions in this forum).

      Thanks.

        RE: A5 v4 not closing

Try making a copy of the application and see if the same thing happens. If it does, try deling one form at a time and see if that eliminates the problem..

        Good Luck

          RE: A5 v4 not closing

          hi:

i've experienced the same problem by omitting the table.close() in a script. is it possible that you have an open table at the end of your app?

          regards,

          ed

            RE: A5 v4 not closing

I've checked all my forms (under design, "actions") and deleted all the "thisform.maximize()" (which I had put in earlier per someone's instructions).

This seemed to take care of that problem, but if I do the "alt-ctrl-del" I now see "A5halt" -- what is causing that now?

I wished I understood this program better!

              RE: A5 v4 not closing

              Carol:

A5Halt.exe is a utility that loads with A5. It is a "circuit Breaker" for the user to manually halt a script that runs for a longer than normal period of time.

If a script locks up A5 (from a bug in the script), the A5Halt TSR will appear on the task bar and, if selected and run, it will release A5 from the script.

How does Alpha judge that a script has run too long. Does the A5 halt generate an error message? I have seen this on one of my client's machines but not on the others. I learned on the board that most people resolved the problem by renaming the file. I did the same but somehow I feel like an ostritch with his head in the sand.

                  Greg:

Can't tell you how long is too long. A5halt can appear while a script is running, and it can appear whena scripted has failed with a bug. Perhaps someone else has more insight.

Rather than renaming A5HALT.EXE, you can begin every script with OPTION NOBREAK to turn it off.
