Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can't get a browse to update itself

    Am using A5V4.5. Question: What instruction(s) make the NEW ITEM just added UPDATE ITSELF IN THE "BROWSE"?

    In the "Invoicing" example that came with A5, a new item is entered through a form LOADED from a button "Edit Invoice Item". When you exit this form, the NEW ITEM appears at the end of the BROWSE.

    I have copied and modified this example for my own use and CAN NOT get the BROWSE to update with the new record! WHAT MAKES THIS HAPPEN? I have examined this invoicing application for quite some time and I do not see what makes this happen OR what would make it NOT happen, as in my case?

    Can't find the example I am talking about? Starting from the beginning: Load A5 and click on OPEN DATABASE, find the directory where the samples/examples of databases from A5 are stored. Click on DATABASES, select and OPEN Invoicing system main menu. Click on INVOICING then Invoice Items TAB, then Edit Invoice Item BUTTON. Now enter a new item and remember which one it was and SAVE RECORD. It shows up in the browse at the end. My copy of this application does NOT SHOW the item in the browse.

    Sorry if it is too wordy but...

    RE: Can't get a browse to update itself

    This problem is often discussed, with a variety of approaches: browse.fetch_First followed by browseX.fetch_last OR update the linking index OR use table rather than form methods...

    At any rate, I'm not sure a "best practice" has been indentified.

    We need to replicate Tom Cone's passing variable, to refreshing browse's after entering a new record. This issue also arises when updating memo fields.

    I wonder if this problem is a candidate for a "CHALLENGE".

    Share your pain...

        RE: Can't get a browse to update itself

        ah..the notorious browse refresh problem. A terrific pain in the backside.

        What I have taken to doing is this:

        After updating or adding a record, I issue this set of commands:

        browse1:somefield.activate()
        browse1.quick_sort(.F.)
        browse1.quick_sort()
        browse1.refresh()

        The only time this doesn't work for me is if I remove the last record in the browse. It will not update the browse at that time, so I instead send a sys_keys_send("{F5}") command, which properly updates the browse.

        You can also return the browse to the previous sort order by making note of which index is active prior to the update. Then send this command:

        browse1.index_set("someindexname")
        browse1.refresh()

        From what I see here, the quick_sort command forces the currently active index to be updated across the network. I've tried many different combinations and have only had success with this one.

        As far as preserving the record pointer after an update, I have found that to be a real trick and haven't devoted enough time to that issue yet.

          Tom,

          Thanks for your wuick reply, Tom.

          I tried what Thomas Patten (above) said to do and that did not work for me either. Iwill try what you said and see if it works for me.

          I am surprised that this has come up as a fix yet if so many people are having trouble with it. I do no remember that this was a problem in ver 4.3. Can Rabin do anything to get this on the docket for a fix?

            I have a recollection that V5 has resolved this.

              Wm,

              Thanks for the input concerning Ver 5. That is
              encouraging, though.
