Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Memo field

I am having a problem with Alpha 5, ver 4.5 build 266 and windows XP Professional. I cannot save anything in a memo field, regardless if I use my existing database or create a new database with a memo field. I can edit the field however when I go to save it, the entries are erased. Any
help would be greatly appreciated. Phil Cady

    Philip,

If you zip a working model of your database illustrating the problem, you could attach it to a message here. Then others who have XP could try it on their system and offer specific suggestions to you.

        RE: Memo field

        Philip,

You did not include a complete working model in your upload. You just included the table, and you omitted the database. For others to test your exact database the entire collection of files is required.

Using Win98SE and Alpha Five Vers. 4.5 I created a new empty database and 'added' your table to it. Using the default form for the table the three memo fields seem to behave correctly. Edits are saved and visible. New memo text is saved and visible.

Using your Emergency form I also saw no problems.

Perhaps someone using XP will be able to test it on their system... I hope so. However, it would be better if you included the entire database.

Now a word about file organization with Alpha Five. I've assumed you are following the recommended strategy and have placed your tables (the DBF, CDX, and FPT files) in the same folder as your database file (the ADB file). I've assumed you're running this locally, and not using a server on your network as the home folder for the database. If any of these assumptions are wrong, you will need to furnish complete and specific descriptions of how you have the database organized. This means telling us where the database is stored, where the tables are stored if different from the database folder, where you are running Alpha Five from (locally over the network), whether the database has been network optimized. The whole thing. Your symptoms suggest that wherever your tables are stored the operating system that controls that hard disk is denying you access to write changes to that disk. You need read-write access to all the files in the database folder including the DBF, FPT and CDX files. Ok?

All my tables are in the same folder as the db file and i am not networked. I also loaded my files on my laptop running windows ME and the memo filed performed OK.

            RE: Memo field

            Philip,

I unzipped the database and entered some memo field text in all three memo fields on the Emergency form. They behave correctly. Edits are saved and displayed. New records, the same.

            I'm using vers. 4.5, build 266 and Win98SE.

We now need someone with XP to step forward and confirm the problem, or offer suggestions.

In the meantime, I recommend you compact the database, and rebuild all indexes, after first creating a safety backup copy.

              Philip,

One other thing. Have you tried editing the three memo fields using the default form for the set? Do you get the same result?

                RE: Memo field

                Phil,

I tried adding memo text in your application under win98se and it worked fine. Why don't you try setting the memo field properties so that as soon as the memo field is opened it saves and then opens in edit mode, as apparently there are problems with memo fields. If I knew how to do this I would tell you, but maybe someone here will help.
