Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

PROBLEM Running App on Win 2k

This is a followup on my previous post re: Massive corruption. My client installed a new version of the app I sent and he's getting the same results. The main menu loads OK but as soon as he presses a button to load a form, the form hardly loads half way and the the app locks up.

He also installed the app on 2 other machines w/win 95 and everything is ducky (runs great).

The app was running OK on his server computer running win2k until he installed a new printer port and software and that's when the problem began. He can get to the control panel Ok but opening a form from the CP produces the same results.

My client opened A5 and the invoice app that comes with A5 and it works fine. He also opened some other apps he designed and they work OK. However, I don't know if the other apps contain Labels etc. I also don't know what type of printer he installed but I will have that info before too long. I also don't know if he tried to print from the other apps. One more thing to find out.

Anyhow, I'm wondering, is it possible there is a conflict between the printer drivers and my app? There is nothing spectacular about the app. Everything is pretty basic other than a multistate button. The main menu has a hidden button to take the user to the control panel. The menu bar has only one menu item on it, to exit the app and there is not tool bar.

Thanks for any and all suggestions,

    kenn

RE: PROBLEM Running App on Win 2k

    Hi Ken
I recently bought a new HP printer (1240 I think) and had some problems when trying to print. I would get the A2DLL error. After some poking around I found that the reports I was trying to print were larger then 8.5x11, but I had the "shrink data to fit on the page" thing checked on the report design. Well apparently this new HP wasn't going to shrink didily. And crashed A5 every time. Once I adjusted the reports to fit on an 8.5x11 page the printer was pleased and decided to actually print my reports.

Not sure this will help you with the label problem your client is having, but thought I would post it anyway.

RE: PROBLEM Running App on Win 2k

      Ken,

It's not clear from your messages how the client's workstations and server are setup.

Is he having trouble when he loads Alpha Five locally, but uses data (and your application) stored on the other machine in his office which is acting as the server?

      OR

Is he having trouble while working on the machine that's acting as the server, and tries to load Alpha Five locally there, and then run the database on the same machine?

I ask because if he has Alpha Five loaded on a work station and opens the invoice app, he's probably running the invoice app locally, not over the network using the server. So you couldn't use that as a valid test to determine whether there's something amiss in your database. Move a copy of the invoice app to the server and see if the client can open it from his workstation. that would be a better test it seems to me.

RE: PROBLEM Running App on Win 2k

        Hi Tom,

I'm not sure how he has the network set up. There is a server running win2k and 2 clients running win95. The main data entry and printing is done on the server and the clients will be used for updating existing records.

As best I can tell, he loaded the app on the server, ran it from the server and it worked fine. I think(?) he accessed the server from the clients and it also ran fine.

Then they installed the new printer port and a HP 76c ?? laser printer and drivers on the server and tried to run some address labels using the server. The address labels would only print the name field so he copied the label report and said he got it to print OK.

Next, he tried to open a form (on the server) and it would only load half way and the the app locked up.

This is further complicated because the computers are at a remote site with no access to the internet and there's no way to communicate with me, unless he calls via phone, unitl he gets home in the evening.

        Thanks for your assistance,

        kenn

Well, how's this for a switch? Just talked with my client and he can access the app on the server from either client and it runs fine. He just can't run the app from the server itself. He's going to trash the HP printer from the server and see what happens.

The only thing I'm not sure of, if he removes the HP, he still has to remove the drivers, right? or will removing the printer also remove the drivers?

            Clarification,

The printer is an older Panasonic dot matrix, not an HP. Anyhow, that will be removed for T&E.

            Thansk,

RE: PROBLEM Running App on Win 2k

Oof 'Da, What a mess!! But the problem is solved. After unhooking and uninstalling the panasonic printer (wasn't a HP), he was able to use the database on the server. HOWEVER, the data was as scrambled as scrambled eggs. Boy, did it ever mess things up. It was as if the link wasn't even there.

So, he downloaded the database to his laptop and deleted the database from the computer, unscrambled the child records as much as possible, and deleted the child records. The database is now working working fine so the baptism will be when he puts it back on the server.

Hard to concieve how a printer driver can conflict with A5 to a point where it'll mess things up so bad.
