Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Cut and Paste Between Databases

Is there anyway to copy a report layout from one database to another. I know you can do it within a database but it doesn't seem to work between different ones. I am running XP.

Look at learn alpha.com. Finian Lennon has posted a couple of programs to copy layouts from one database to another. May be useful in your case.

        Tommy,

I've done just that, several times:

        1. Go to the database which has the report to be copied.
        2. Select the report, click the copy icon or right click and select 'copy'.
        3. Go to the control panel of the database you want the report to be copied.
        4. Click the Report tab, click the paste icon or right click anywhere on the white and select 'paste'.
        5. Choose the appropriate table or set.

You may have to delete or add fields for the report.

This works as well for forms, browses, etc.

          Kenn,

Thanks a million. Is this documented anywhere? This is exactly what I need.

            Yup,

My post. I just started doing to see if it would work and it does. I think there are many other users who do the same, at least a few.

            This should work well.

Is their a way to copy the same report between computers. They are not networked. I have a written a application and I would like to make changes to a report and then send them to the cleint.

              Thanks

Not w/o coping to a disk or email. If both computers have PC Anywhere, you could bring up the client's hard drive on your screen and make the changes.

                    Yes, it's more than possible.

You can drag and drop the files to the disk or you can programs such as WinZip and simply zip the files to the disk.

Can you only copy the report or forms layouts?
If so can you only copy one report instead of all reports and forms? What I am trying to do is change one report and then copy it to a disk and send it to the cleint. I do not want to copy of the reports only one. I know that I can zip up the whole database and send it to them, but I do not have the current data of theres, so I would like to change one report and send them the change on that report or form.

                      thanks for your help

Yes it can be done but I don't think you will love the answer. IF both computers had PcAnywhere, you could email the app to the client, gain control of the client's computer, unzip the app, open both apps and copy the report or form from one app to the other.

Another way is to copy the app to another folder, strip it down to just the tables (and sets if the layout is based on a set). No data, gut it out as much as possible; get rid of all layouts, reports, etc. except the ones you want to send to your client. Then zip the app and send it to the client.

The client unzips the app, opens it and copies the report or form to his database.

A mean and dirty way to do it but it can be done.
