Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re-Calculated Fields

    Hi All

This is my problem. I have 5 Numerical fields in a table. Fields 4 and 5 are calculated. Field 4 is the value of Fields 1 and 3 and Field 5 is the value of Field 4 and 2. After I enter the values into Fields 1,2 and 3 the calculations in Fields 4 and 5 are correct. So what is the problem you ask? Well if I now change any of the values in Fields 1,2 or 3. Field 4 recalculates instantly but Field 5 does not until I press Save. How do I make both calculated fields display the correct values before a commit action?

    RE: Re-Calculated Fields

Calculated fields defined in field rules that occupy a field in the table are calculated when the data is saved. Calculated fields defined on a form are calculated when the data is changed. Is it possible you have different types of calculated fields?

      Ohlen

      Thanks for your quick reply.

Both calculated fields are defined in field rules. Should I have a calculated field on the form for viewing only but the value is then saved in the calculated field of the table?

        RE: Re-Calculated Fields

Try making field 5 the sum of field1 + field2 + field3 rather than field4 + field2. This should cause field5 to automatically refresh when changing a value.

          RE: Re-Calculated Fields

          Keith:

I agree with John... I've found that field rules calculations work with all-user-entered fields instantly. When another calculated field attempted using the result of previous calculated fields the change doesn't refresh until the save.

Summary: Each of the calc fields must reference user-entered values only. I.e.

field 1 user entered has 22
field 2 is calc'ed as 11/2 if you add them together do this.

field 3 should be (field1/2)+field 1 rather than....
          field1+calc->field2

          I've seen this several times.

            Keith,

John and Ken have hit the nail on the head. I read your note too fast and missed that one calculated field is the result of another calculated field. Another way is to define the fields at form level for display and at table or set level for permantent storage.

I thought the US was a great place for Queens.

                      Elton John loves it there.
