Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME AN IDEA OF WHERE TO START?
    I WANT TO CONVERT A DATE FIELD IE 02-14-1981 TO CALCULATE THE NEAREST BIRTHDATE IE "19"

    RE: AGE CALCLULATION

    Search this forum for age birthdate. You'll find several ways of calculating the age from the birthdate. It'll get you started.

        RE: AGE CALCLULATION

        Here is a age function that gives a age based on todays date.

        function Age as N(DateVal as D)

        years = val(left(cdate(date()),4))-val(left(cdate(DateVal),4))
        if val(right(cdate(date()),4))>=val(right(cdate(DateVal),4))
        age = years
        else
        age = years - 1
        end if

        end function

        If you need to find an age at a certain date (how old were they on Jan 10, 1999), then you would have to add another input value in the function to use that data rather than todays date (date())

          RE: AGE CALCLULATION

          I think the most accurate was of subtracting dates is to convert both dates to Julian (the number of days since some particular standardized starting date).

          You do this with the JDATE function.

          For example, JDATE(date()) gives the Julian value for today.

          For 4/8/02, the JDATE value is actually 2452373.

          If the variable is birth (defined as a date), then:
          JDATE(date()) - jdate(birth) gives the age in days.

          If you want the actual age to date in years:
          int(JDATE(date())-JDATE(birth))

          If you want the age to nearest year:
          round(JDATE(date())-JDATE(birth)),0)

          (I hope I got all the parentheses matched up.
          But you get the idea.)

            Typo correction !!
            6th word above should be "way", not "was".

              RE: AGE CALCLULATION

              The following works for me.

              INT(((DATE()-DOB)/365.25))

              DOB = a date field for Date of Birth.

              Mike

                RE: AGE CALCLULATION

                INT(((DATE()-DOB)/365.25)) will not be accurate all the time if the date you are checking is on someone's actual birthday. You can check this by seeing the age when the dob is 04/08/1956 or 1957 or 1958 or 1959 and you are calculatingthe age on the date of 04/08/2002.

                Jerry's method will always work. Leap years are not a factor.
