Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Using two fields to link databases

    Okay everybody here goes:

I have two databases that have pretty similar information in them. They look like this:

    Database 1: Database 2:
    Crop Room Trays Crop Room Pounds---- ----- ----- ---- ---- ------
    1 3 430 1 3 5320
    1 5 429 1 5 4220
    2 13 433 2 13 250
    2 15 444 2 15 120
    3 2 430 3 2 6500
    3 4 432 3 4 5300

What I want to do is join the two databases into one, or create a set that gives this result.

    Crop Room Trays Pounds
    ---- ---- ----- ------
    1 3 430 5320
    1 5 429 4220 2 13 433 250
    2 15 444 120
    3 2 430 65003 4 432 5300

Now, I know that you are thinking this looks easy, but I haven't slept for a week trying to get this to happen. Joining the databases only finds the first record if it finds any, and a set does the same thing.

Anyone want to take a shot at it?

    Thanks,
    Greg Williams

I just read my message and the formatting is off. I hope you can sort it out.

RE: Using two fields to link databases

I think I know what you want to do, but I don't understand how

      1 5 429 4220
      is related to
      2 13 433 250

      Can you explain the linkage?
      There can be only one.

        Maybe it's the formatting...

If you want to link the two tables on common crop and room, decide which is the parent, probably database1.

Start creation of a new set. When you are in the dialog box, add link, to database2. In the link box for database1 the first available field will be visible. Arrow up from that field and you are allowed choose "expression>.

I assume crop and room numbers are numerical fields. Try the expression

        str(crop)+" ""+str(room)

in both link boxes. If you merely add the two numbers together you may get "false" matches like (3 + 2) = (1 + 4)
        There can be only one.

          Stan:

Again the formatting messed up what I was trying to get across. Let's look at individual records as if I had exported them to a CSV file.

          Database 1:
Again the fields are Crop, Room, Trays
          1,3,430
          1,5,429
          2,13,433
          2,15,444
          3,2,430
          3,4,432

          Database 2:
          Fields are Crop, Room, Pounds
          1,3,5320
          1,5,4220
          2,13,250
          2,15,120
          3,2,6500
          3,4,5300

I want to create another database like this by combining Database #1 and Database #2:
Fields are Crop, Room, Trays, Pounds
          1,3,430,5320
          1,5,429,4220
          2,13,433,250
          2,15,444,120
          3,2,430,6500
          3,4,432,5300

          Now does it make sense?

Got a little heavy fingered, only two quotes between the parts of the expression

              str(crop)+" "+str(room)
              There can be only one.

RE: Using two fields to link databases

You might consider creating a single database/table with all the information in it, since it seems that your data is consistent across the two now. You could then hide/show those fields of the record which you do not want to show on a particular form. I don't see much need for a set in this instance, but I think it could be done but would not be very beneficial to you.
