Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Cannot Load Specified Form

I copied a database from my desktop to my laptop. The tables copied fine. The forms and reports come up with the following error: The form name is Prescriptions.

"cannot load specified form "Prescriptions". Using a default form instead"

When attempting to goto the design of the form, the error is then:

    "Internal Error: StoreCreate"

    Same things on the reports.

    The tables open fine.

On Broweses, I get "Could not load that saved layout", then a "default" browse opens.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Al Smith

Al, how did you do the copy? It sounds like you may have omitted the dictionary files. This is where your custom form and report layouts are stored.

I copied from the C drive on the desktop to a zip drive. I did a Ctrl-A to select all the files, and even changed the folder options to get the hidden files - if any. The only difference is the OS of the 2 computers. The desktop is WindowsMe, and the laptop, XP Home Edition.

        PROBLEM SOLVED............

Alpha5 is not compatible with WindowsXP.

So, I was running it in a W95 compatible mode. However, after thinking about it, I remembered that WXP is a aboration of Windows2000 and NT.

So, I tried running in Windows2000 compatiblity, and it worked.

          Al,

I'm glad you got it going.

However, I'm puzzled by your statement about XP. I thought vers 4.5 of alpha five was compatible with XP. Is this wrong? -- tom

              Al,

the Alpha online shop describes Alpha Five pretty carefully, and does not mention any limitations when using XP, as I recall.

                    Heh, I hear you.

I still run one application on Alpha4 version 2 because it is mission-critical and that thing has *never* crashed in 6 years of use. Nada once. I will never give up that database :)

                        Tom,

I have a few A4V6 apps that - prior to the recent conference - I have REFUSED to even consider upgrading to A5, but based on what I saw of the V5 Beta, I have accepted the reality that my beloved DOS is dead (sniff, sniff).

I'm keeping track of what (and how) the conversion goes, to include A4 memo fields. When I'm done, I'll post the sequence so that other diehard A4 (DOS) folks, can bite the bullet can convert. From what Sewlyn showed us about the Beta of A5, I can't come up with any reason NOT to convert.
