Has anyone successfully ran a A5V4.5b266 Runtime app on a virtual LAN? Specifically, the data/app set is on a 'server' (or a shared folder on a P2P network) where others connect to it via a VPN thru the net?
Currently my client has several sites that use PCANYWhere to connect to the main plant where the A5 app is housed. Some connect via a dialup; others thru the net a various speeds (main plant is on 3-5mbps fibre but others are on 256 to 384DSL). The dialups are horribly slow but the DSL connections are a dog too. And the machine hosting the pcAnyWhere session is unuseable during the session. All-in-all performance is terrible this way.
I'd like to put the A4 app data set on either a Netware volume or a Linux box running the Samba filespace, install the Linksys VPN routers at each of the other sites and them have them appear to the server as local clients but I have no experience with these Linksys VPN routers (we use one of the older Linksys Internet routers at the main plant now to share access and it's been flawless), virtual LAN setups, or know anything about A5 Runtime's capability when running under this kind of setup.
Leased T1's are not an option, esp. with the cost to sites that are across state lines and from different phone service providers. Talk about a budget buster...!!!
If you've got experience with other long distance setups for A5 apps that work well I'd also like to hear about those.
Thanks for the help with this...
