Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calculated field

I want to use a calculated field on a set so that a total of child records are shown in the set header. When i did this the calculated field displays works but when I change to a new record it maintains the total from the previous record and adds the amount of the new child record to the total. Please can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong.

How I did this in my old database was define a field on the parent file to total records on the child file, I can't find a way of doing this in Alpha.

    Hope someone can help.

    RE: Calculated field

I have found out how to do this by pressing the advanced button in the calculated dialogue box. Now have a new problem I want another calculated field to calculate by dividing one calculated field by the other because when I define this and put the expression in leaving the funcion at "value" I cannot get into the advanced to enter the group and subgroup.

      RE: Calculated field

Did you create the calc field by using "New calc field" from the drop-down? If so, the calc expression is probably:

      TOTAL(FIELD_NAME,GRP->GROUP_NAME)

I and others have found that this expression is NOT always reliable. On the other hand, DBSUM seems very reliable.

      Try this:

      DBSUM("TABLE.DBF","INDEX_NAME",VALUE TO MATCH,"FIELD")

Your child would be the TABLE, finding records based on the child's INDEX_NAME. VALUE TO MATCH is usually the field that serves as the link between the child and parent. FIELD is the field name in the child from which you get the total amount.

        David,

Please be more descriptive. Your request is too vague. Is this a report, form, etc. More details about the calculated field.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

          RE: Calculated field

I want to define another calculated field to calculate by dividing one calculated field by the other because when I define this and put the expression in leaving the funcion at "value" I cannot get into the advanced to enter the group and subgroup.

I now have two calculated fields one called "Number of Shares" the other called "Total Value" I want to divide Total Value by Number of shares to give me unit price.

This is a set with two one to many relationships linged by sharename and the calculated fields are on a form.

The way I did it with my previous database was to have these three fields in both the parent and child files and specify in the parent fields to total the child records which would then give me a stored result in the parent file.

          Hope this is more clear.

          regards
          David
