Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Network

    Good afternoon!

I have a test application at a school to keep track of the little darlings. I had a runtime on each of 3 systems and the data file on a server.
Now the school districts's computer people change these systems out to different ones running 2000 pro, put a runtime on the server and each station now calls up the same runtime to access the data file.
Will this work (and be just slow) or will it cause headaches?

    Duane,

"...put a runtime on the server and each station now calls up the same runtime to access the data file."

This is not the recommended setup. Normally you have a runtime on each station and the data on the server.

      Thanks

I understand it is not the proper way to do this (as per the Alpha Runtime instructions). But until I can meet with these IT guys, is this going to create errors or corruption?

        Duane,
It's pretty hard for anyone to tell you for sure if if you are going to have problems if they have never tried to run it that way. It's not supposed to run that way and I can't think of a single reason to try to run it that way, but my guess is that beyond running very slow there will probably be problems.

          RE: Network

          Hello Duane,

This shouldn't be a problem. Each node will indeed be running a 'seperate' copy of the runtime (in memory), they will just be loading it from the same network location. As the runtime (unlimited I assume) does not require a distinct ID number, any number of nodes could load it from the same location.

The issues as I see them are:

          1. Loading speed over the network will be slower.
          2. Queries are stored 'locally' when you are networked optimized, but in this case all queries would reside on the server where the runtime is located. This means that one node's queries would then showup/affect the other nodes view of the tables on the network. You could solve this by always dropping the queries when you are done with them IF you are querying via Xbasic.
          3. A program will swap different parts of itself in and out of memory while it is operating. This of course necessitates disk access which would happen over the network so this could cause a speed degradation.

Basically, I don't think it will cause you a problem other than speed and queries.

Yes, I realize it will be slow, but you have comforted my concerns over corruption issues. Speed isn't a factor in this situation. It is more of will it work and function without crapping out.
The school board doesn't want anything on these computers other than what they have installed. So it will take me another bunch of time convincing them again the program is compatable with their systems and won't cause any problems for them. Then I can reinstall the runtimes (unlimited) on the 3 systems and optimize so all works as designed.

            Many thanks
            Duane
