Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    OK ALRAEDY I'LL TRY IT

OK OK OK I have been listening and reading and am ready to try A5 (you might notice my email address and see that I will take some convincing). A couple of questions before I do: with a4 I spent 6 months developing the app at home then took it to work put it in the network and found out all the refrences to "C" drive had to be rewritten to a mapped network drive, in my case that was "G". 2 weeks of watching it crash all the time while I found all the places that had to be rewritten to "G" really left a bad taste in the people's mouth whom I was trying to impress. As I am totaly new to this A5, does this bring to mind any issues I should know about from the start. What I want to do is load A5 onto a jazz drive/disc and be able to work on it at home and at work. Will this work? I would be very happy for any advise posted. or if some one has the time and inclination to email me their phone # and time to call I would very much like to discuss startup issues.

Thanking All of you in anvance

RE: OK ALRAEDY I'LL TRY IT

    Jeff,

During development you should have no problem working with the database at home or the office using a Jazz drive. However, it's important that you keep all the pieces of each database in the same folder on the disc. This includes the database dictionary, all the tables, memo files, indexes, and so on.

Each database can reside in a different folder, but all of a database should be self-contained therein. Remember, in Alpha Five the DBF files are not databases, they're tables. The database is the whole ball of wax, including the tables.

When you get closer to deploying on the network there are a number of things you will do differently than with Alpha Four, but you're probably a long way off from doing that, so I'd recommend you concentrate on getting up to speed with Alpha Five and defer the setup stuff til later.

As for converting to Alpha Five I think it's important to start small. Become familiar with how Alpha Five works, using default forms and browses. Figure out how the user interface works using all the default tools. Play with a few of the samples and templates. Build a simple name and address database, from scratch. Create a few reports and labels. Use the genie to build button scripts to automate changing forms, and running reports. Play with queries and discover how they're different from sorts and finds. Have fun exploring!

I often think folks underestimate how complex their existing Alpha Four applications have become, and then they get VERY frustrated when they immediately begin building complex, interconnected forms in Alpha Five without having mastered the basics of the Alpha Five interface.

You will also want to become familiar with the many resources available in the articles at www.learn alpha.com.

RE: OK ALRAEDY I'LL TRY IT

      Hi Jeffrey:

I don't think you could possibly get any better advice than Tom Cone just offered. Let me echo his sentiments as I agree wholeheartedly with everything he said.

I will add only one thought of my own. Alpha Five uses a different paradigm and it really takes awhile to get the hang of it. In fact, the change can be excruciatingly difficult for a long time Alpha Four user. Obviously the amount of time it takes to adjust will be different for everyone.

But if you carefully follow Tom's advice and hang in there, one day soon it will suddenly hit you and you will probably say to yourself, "Oh, that's how it works". Once you reach that moment of enlightenment [is that a word?], it's all downhill.

      Have fun,
      Robert

Jeff, check out the article in the Alpha Newsletter, "Alpha Four to Alpha Five Transition." (If you didn't get the newsletter, please e-mail me and I'll make sure you get it). I wrote the article because of the trouble I had when I first started using A5, and the tips in the article (which I got from Cal Locklin) were a tremendous help.

FWIW: I have been using Jazz & Zip drives to copy my app between work & home for years.
