Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Okidata TOF creep problem

I'm trying to print labels to my Okidata ML 320 Turbo dotmatrix printer. I'm printing over a network from a Win2000 machine. I'm printing continuous feed labels that are 1 7/16" high by 3 1/2" wide. The top of form prints slightly lower on each label until it is printing off of the label. This happens even when I create a custom size label. If I hook up our Panasonic KX-P2023, it prints fine. I realize this is more of an Okidata issue than an Alpha Five issue, but Okidata hasn't been very helpful so far. Does anyone out there have any ideas?

    RE: Okidata TOF creep problem

    Nathan,

It sounds like the vertical height of your label is a bit taller than the space from the top of one label to the top of the next. This may be due to different internal line heights in each printer. You might try reducing the overall height of your label layout somewhat; save it as a custom sized label using a different layout name. This may take some experimenting and trial & error.

If this doesn't work, you might want to use a font in your label layout that matches both type and size of the internal (built in) fonts available in your printer.

Search this forum for other tips and solutions for working with dot matrix printers.

      RE: Okidata TOF creep problem

      Nathan,

You may want to try using the native fonts of the dotmatrix printer since the forms are likely designed with a height appropriate for these.

As a bare minimum, you may be able to set the TOF (Top of form) on the printer in the windows initialization codes for the printer to your form size and then advance to the next form by formfeed instead of using linefeeds. This may keep the form from creeping past its TOF alignment.

For these form printing tasks I tend to go in and tell Windows that this is a Default Text Only printer so windows sets it up with only native fonts and in text mode. Dotmatrix printers tend to run faster in text mode than in graphical mode too. You may spend some time reading the printer's manual to find the correct printer initialization command codes to tell the printer exactly how to behave for form height and width. Most printers wake up ready to deal with an 8.5"x11" paper of course but you can chance this to anything you need.

Hope it will be the top o'the day to you once the top of form problem is resolved!

        RE: Okidata TOF creep problem

Thanks for your tips. I tried the generic text driver, but was having trouble understanding how to implement the correct printer initialization codes. I did get more help from Okidata when I called for technical support. They recommended using an Epson driver, which took care of the problem.
