Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dates Question.

    Hi All

I have two date fields on a form. I need to make sure the second date can never be less than the first date. It is OK for the first date to be blank. I have tried diffrent things in field rules but I keep getting error messages which prevents me from closing the simple default box. Your help please.

    RE: Dates Question.

Did you try code on the candepart event for the second date on the form. Should look like

    if :formname:seconddatefieldname.value
    There can be only one.

      RE: Dates Question.

      Hi Keith,

How can date_2 be evaluated as a true date (later in time than date_1)
when date_1 is blank? Is it possible to put temporary date in date_1
when it ordinarilly would be blank?

        RE: Dates Question.

First you have to evaluate if the first date is blank ant then check the difference.

        if alltrim(cdate(:formname:seconddatefieldname.value)"" if :formname:seconddatefieldname.value

          RE: Dates Question.

I'm getting old and slow. I didn't even notice that (first date can be blank)part of the question.

          Thanks Jerry.

I'll repost your answer with what I think you meant for formatting.

          if alltrim(cdate(:formname:seconddatefieldname.value)">""

          if :formname:seconddatefieldname.value " :formname:firstdatefieldname.value
          ui_msg_box(....) ' to explain problem
          cancel()
          end if

          end if
          There can be only one.

            RE: Dates Question.

            Thanks for all your replies.

I will try the candepart event that looks like a good idea.

In field rules, I was simply trying to test that the value in date2 was greater than date1, which in my simple mind meant that the value of date1 would be zero if it was blank, why does that not work?

Hope to see you at the conference.

              RE: Dates Question.

              Keith,

In math a zero is not 'nothing'. It's a specific point on the number line. It's the same thing with computers. A zero is a constant value. It exists and has meaning. A blank or null field has not yet received a value. Your blank date field has no value which can be compared with other date fields.

By convention the dBase format which Alpha Five uses will store blank space characters in each empty field when a record is saved. If you compare a field with blank spaces with a date field which contains a date value the comparison will fail. It's apples and oranges.

                Stan,

Thanks for correcting the post format, speaking of old and slow. By the way, there needs to be one more bracket on the first line.

                if alltrim(cdate(:formname:seconddatefieldname.value))""

                if :formname:seconddatefieldname.value

                    Thank for your help.
This is what I have done, but what I need now is to cancel the date input if No is selected.

                    if alltrim(cdate(:Jobs:Date2.value))""
                    if :Jobs:Date2.value

Thanks for input. This does not delete the incorrect date ie. Date2 being the lower value of Date1, I am still able to complete the form. Also, please can you tell me what the cancel() instruction does at this point.

                          RE: Dates Question.

You may want to set up another ui_msg_box, telling them that they need to re enter the 2nd date, then do an object goto to the 2nd date field for entry. Don't let them pass until it is good.

                            Hi Thomas

                            Thank you for your reply.

I am still at the learning stage with this xbasic.

I was hoping that if the message box came up with the statement that the date was incorrect, the user would click the OK button and that would take them back to the begining of the date to be re-entered. How would you suggest I do this?

As Thomas indicated, give focus back to the object

                              if alltrim(cdate(:Jobs:Date2.value))""
                              if :Jobs:Date2.value
