Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Outlook Express5, almost there.

    I have placed a button next to a field containing e-mail addresses. When the button is pressed, I would like it to open the "New Message" form in "Outlook Express 5". and to enter the e-mail address. I have attached the following Xbasic:-

    Email=:Client_Details:E_Mail.value
    :clipboard.set_data(Email)
    x=sys_shell("C:Program FilesOutlook Expressmsimn.exe")

    This opens Outlook Express, if I now manually press CTRL-M, this opens the New Message form. So I tried adding the line:-

    sys_send_keys("{CTRL-M}") 'Unfortunately this line does not open the form, I dont know why not, the intention was to then add:-

    sys_send_keys("{CTRL-V}") 'This should insert the e-mail address

    I am able to manually open the form and then Paste (CTRL-V) the e-mail address.

    Strangely, the following Xbasic does enter the e-mail address into notepad, which suggests that I am very close.

    Email=:Client_Details:E_Mail.value
    :clipboard.set_data(Email)
    x=sys_shell("c:windowsnotepad.exe")
    sys_send_keys("{CTRL-V}")

    I know that V5 will do be able to do this easily. Has anyone any ideas?

    Thanks, David

    David,

    Check out the thread entitle "email as per Selwyn" a bit further down.
    You probably should not use the clipboard and sys_send_keys when you have variables to hold values as you transfer them. I've adapted the code for you.

    ------------
    vEmail=:Client_Details:E_Mail.value
    sys_open("mailto:vEmail [email protected] &subject=your choice of subject")
    ------------

    This command should be on a single line.

      I have tried Bill's Xbasic and it works fine except Outlook Express puts the variable name (vEmail) in the address field instead of its contents. I am using Windows Xp and OE 6. Does that make a difference?

        Andrew:

        I use OE6 so it's not that. Do not use XP but I doubt that has anything to do with it.

        I'd bet it has something to do with how you declare and manage the variable. Why don't you give some details.

          Bill

          The Xbasic code attched to the button on the form is:

          vEmail=:Membership__All_Records:E_Mail.value
          sys_open("mailto:=vEmail?subject=KAS")

          The button is on the form "Membership: All Records" (my quotes).
          The name of the object on the form containing the email address is E_MAIL.

          The name of the form as in the previous paragraph but dragging it from the Xbasic explorer to the editing window I find it in the form shown on the first line of the Xbasic code.

          vEmail id declared as a global variable for the set from the control panel, set structure, set, global variables: level, global; name, vEmail; type, character; value, empty (though I have tried "").

          The email field is in a one to one child table immediately under the top table.

          I am using A5 v4.5

          Is this any help?

            Try
            sys_open("mailto:=" + vEmail + "?subject=KAS")

              Andrew:

              Sorry to be so slow. Too much to do.

              I use the following without issue:

              ==========
              vBody="Please update the phone directory as follows:"
              vSubj="Phonebook correction"
              vInput="mailto:[email protected] ?subject="+vSubj+"&body="+vBody
              sys_open(vInput)
              ==========

              I don't know how this will display so let me state that each command is on its own line.

                Bill & John

                Thanks to both of you for your prompt help.

                John's code works witth 2 small changes:
                sys_open("mailto:"+trim(vEmail)+"?subject=KAS")

                Bill, I have not tried your code yet, but thanks for the suggestion
