Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Hlep with Field Rules

    Good day,

I'm a new user to Alpha Five, but very familiar with databases of all types.

I am trying to use a table field to store a number from 1 to 99. The number will be input by the user. The field will be a Character field unless someone can tell me how to make this work as a Numeric field. I want the user to be able to enter single digit numbers from 1 to 9 without having to enter a leading zero. I want the end result to contain a leading zero.

The number will later be used in a calculated field along with other fields to construct an index number (not to be confused with an Indexed Field in Alpha Five). I have exhausted all of the possiblities that I can think of including using a separate field to concatenate a zero in front of the entered number. This works for single digit entries, but truncates double digit entries and I lose the last digit.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks, Danno...

    look at the padl function:

    padl(alltrim(your_field),2,"0")

      RE: Hlep with Field Rules

Based on your needs I would leave it as a numeric field. In the field rules, under the validations tab, I would add 1 as the Minimum Value and 99 as the maximum value.

Within the indexnumber field the numeric field above would always use 2 characters and be defined as
      padl(ltrim(str(numfield)),2,"0")

Here's a slightly different twist to Finnian's idea:

Have two fields, the first of which the user would enter 1-99 (if you make it numeric, it can be sorted properly). Then have the second field be calculated, using Finnian's expression. Then you can use the second field to build your "index".

          Good day Allen,

Thank you for responding to my question. Your remedy works very well. The only problem I have now is do I want the field to be Numeric or Character. I will experiment with both and then decide. It's good to know there is help close by.

            Good day Finian,

Thank you for responding to my question. Your remedy works very well. I see there is a lot more to learn here about functions. I am very well acquainted with the functions in Excel, so it shouldn't be too hard. It's good to know that help is close by.

              Good day Bill,

Thank you for responding to my question. Your remedy works very well. The remedy provided by Finian also works, so I will probably use that to keep the number of fields down in my database. However, if problems should arise, it's good to know that there is another way around the issue.
