Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sort Browse Column

    I want to be able to click on a browse column title and have the browse sort on the current field. I want an indicator as part of the column title to display sort order, either asc. or desc., preferrably using an up/down arrow, and to be a toggle between the two. I want the arrow to be hidden/not displayed if that column is not the object of the current sort.

    Is the currently sorted column a property that can be read?
    How about the currently sorted order?

    Is it better to use all XBasic rather than try to use the quick_sort() method and track sorting through the use of a flag?

    This looks impossible to me without a ton of buttons, Xbasic, bitmaps and finageling. Anyone tried to accomplish this?

    RE: Sort Browse Column

    Hi Tom

    This is achieved with hot spot buttons at the top of each column. I will post the scripts when I get home tonight. This is something that Charlie Crimmel sent to me.

      RE: Sort Browse Column

      Tom,

      I created an online phone book for our organization which does what I think you are aiming for.

      There is a form with an embedded browse holding listings. Among others thebrowse has fields for Firstname, Lastname, Office number and Department. If the current listing is John Jones and you double click on the first name field the browse is filtered to records with the same first name (John) and the title bar text becomes:
      Firstname="John"

      If Jones is in English and you double click on the department field you see only people in English and the title bar reads:
      Department="English"

      The script is attached. I don't have time to proof it now so I hope it is all in there. If not, more later.

        Here is the App. There is a lot of other stuff in there also. All very good to learn with. With great thanks to Charlie Crimmel.

          RE: Sort Browse Column

          I see how hotspots can be used for such a function. However, I am wanting some cake and to eat it, too. Other programs I have seen will do what I have in mind. I'm quite certain A5 just doesn't have this capability built in, but I am wishing for it. I understand that with a bit, ok, well, maybe a lot, of XBasic, I can do what I would like to do.

          My goal is to allow users special options with a catch-all form I have created. It's designed to search an entire table for data you know is there but just cannot find through normal methods. This would include using quick filters, quick sorts, queries and other sundry methods.

          There are many ways to skin this cat. I am currently looking over the whole range of methods before deciding on the one I will use. I'm not sure I want to devote much time to it, so a simple answer would be nice, but not absolutely necessary.

          If and when I find a solution that suits me, i will post it here. Chances are, I am the only one it will suit :)

            That's on the order of what I would like to see, but not quite like it. I just want to click on a browse title and have the column sorted immediately, with an indicator of the ascending/decending order, whichever is appropriate, in the browse title.

            As of now, I am unable to find any type of control/object that will allow a mouse click to bleed through an embedded browse object.

            I can place my own browse titles, of course, but would rather not if there is another way to accomplish the task at hand. I am doubtful, however.

            I was hoping Ira would chime in with a magical fix as so often happens :)

              It's not really that hard to do in XBasic (two variables, three bitmaps, and one button per column). But then again, I'm not that good at XBasic. The attached file mimics the ListView in Visual Basic.

                RE: Sort Browse Column

                Hi all,

                As usual it is so interesting to see what others have done. I thought I might add that the code I posted would have been much simpler had I been writing in Version 5. In fact, having written that code helped me understand what the following new (Ver.5) methods are for:

                .active_prev()
                Returns the name of the object that previously had focus. This is particularly useful when you want to have a button on a form perform some action on the object that currently has focus. As soon as you press the button, the button has focus. Using this method, you can determine which object had focus before the button was pressed.

                .ActivePrevDrillDown()
                Returns the name of the previous object, drilling down to the lowest level. Contrast with active_prev() which will returns a container name, e.g. "browse1" if the previous object was not at the top level on the Form.
