Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error 8

    Hi Phorum,

I have an app that has been running in A5V4.5 build 266 for about 10 months on a 1.5 Gig machine. Suddenly when the user tries to print 1 of the reports, she gets an Error 8 message. I looked it up in "Xbasic Reference Manual" and it says "not enough memory". This machine has 256 megs of Dimms 133, am I interpretting it improperly ?

Does a reboot eliminate the error?

Ask her if she turns her machine off at night. Some people who keep there machines on perpetually run out of memory after a while.

      RE: Error 8

Bill is right. Microsoft has had a memory "leak" problem for a long time. They claimed that Win98 fixed it, then WinME, and so on. The problem seems to be related to Windows not properly releasing memory when a program closes. I use a lot of graphics programs and the problem is particulary troublesome, even in WinME, which is MUCH better than Win95 or Win98. Eventually I have to reboot to clear the memory. Once a day seems about right.

Another clue that memory resources are getting low is the loss of some keyboard functions. On my current work computer, I lose the TAB key when memory is low.

        RE: Error 8

        Hi William,

It does it right after a fresh boot. In fact I used a power off for 30
seconds to allow the power supply caps to discharge, because all
mainboards do not provide a reset on RAM, otherwise the RAM can contain
data for a short period of time.

It's astounding how many problems are cured by a cold reboot. My MIS manager once said "Windows needs an occasional rest."

            Ed,

            You said,

            It does it right after...

Do you mean the error reoccurs after a reboot?

            or

Do you mean that the routine behaves 'right' immediately following a reboot?

I had been asked if i rebooted and tried it again. I was trying to say
that yes, I rebooted (including a 30 sec power off) and then tried to print the report and it still gave me an Error 8 message.

I have made it mandatory on all systems to cold boot everytime. It is
surprising how much garbage remains in RAM after you exit an
                  application.
