Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Runtime???

If possible could someone explain how the runtime version works. If I write an application does the customer have to buy Alpha or can I just give them a CD and let them load it on the computer. I am running applications on my own system for now, but I would like to be a little more mobile in the future.

    RE: Runtime???

It works differently from the old versions. You actually have a copy of Alpha. You are not able to design or modify the application from the runtime version. What this allows you to do is after you have distributed the runtime version you can send out as many applications as you want to that person/client. All you have to send is the application files rather than the runtime again. If you have a "shortcut" to the database it will launch right into that application.

If you are capable you can create a batch to perform all the operations you need to install the runtime and applications.

    I like it.

      Hi Bruce

Could you please let us know how to create the install batch, that will load Alpha and the applications.

        Thanks that helps a lot.
I guess I should have also asked how to distribute the runtime version. I understand that they can't alter the app but what files do I copy and can I put them on a CD to send or do I have to use disks or whatever. I am thinking of getting the runtime version, but I have to cost it out amoung my apps.
I love this program and Access is a pain.

            RE: Runtime???

I think we a little on the edge of the forum and getting into where some begin to charge. ;)

In a very very simple form.

create a bat file something like:

you can even use the autorun on a cd to run the bat
rem this line will install alpha
            install.exe
rem once comlete copy files to newapp dir.

            md c:newapp
            cdapp
            copy *.* c:newapp

This is very basic and I would not recommend something this simple because if they use drive D: or a network drive it will bomb. This will give a simple idea of how easy it could be.

              RE: Runtime???

When you develop your app, all of the files will fall in one directory or directory tree if you used subdirectories. Simply copy all the files from the directory of your development Alpha and put them in the directory on the runtime machine or network. Really, the runtime and Full version are the same with the editing restrictions. If you create a startup form (highly recommended) you can control the interface, like hiding the control panel, assignig access levels, calling other apps . . . .

              Hope this helps a bit.
