Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Expression Not Working

    Given:

    DHI......Calc DHI_PREF substr(DHI,1,3)

    GMK......GMK
    AAA-MK...AAA
    AA-MK....AA-

Required To elininate any prefix if it equals
GMK or contains a "-" (in positions 1 to 3).

    Expression:
    substr(Dhi,1,3) "GMK".and. "-" $ substr(Dhi,1,3)

The first part of the expression on its own works, it eliminates GMK.

The second part of the expression eliminates ALL. It appears to find the "-" in positions beyond the third. ps. also tried the second part by itself, same result.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Looks like a job for nested if expressions.

See discussion of the IF() function at pg 408 of the xbasic ref. manual.

      Tom
Have used nested if's extensively, but not sure why your recommending them for this problem. It appears that the $ expression is not working in the negative eg. NOT EXIST (). Have used this expression many times but always in the positive EXISTS and it has always worked fine. Is it possible that the $ expression can only be used in the positive? Not sure how nested if's will help.

      Thanks

        RE: Expression Not Working

your second use of "" makes no sense (at least to me).

i think what you want is something like

        .not. ((substr(Dhi,1,3)="GMK").or.("-"$substr(Dhi,1,3)))

          John, maybe this will help.

          From the interactive editor:

          dim fname as c
          fname = "AAA-10-BBB"

          ?if(*any(substr(fname,1,3),"-"),"Hyphen found","Hyphen not found")
          = "Hyphen not found"
          fname = "AA-10,BBB"
          ?if(*any(substr(fname,1,3),"-"),"Hyphen found","Hyphen not found")
          = "Hyphen found"

Did the trick, but don't understand why my original construct did not ?

              John,

One important difference is .and. vs .or.

In the former both parts must be true or the entire thing is false. In the latter, either part may be true and the entire thing is true.

                John,

Please pardon the last post. It's clear you know the diff between .and. and .or.

                Instead of
                substr(Dhi,1,3) "GMK".and. "-" $ substr(Dhi,1,3)

                Would this work?
                substr(Dhi,1,3) "GMK".and. .not. "-" $ substr(Dhi,1,3)

If so, maybe that explains the problem.

                  RE: Expression Not Working

                  John,

Below is what I believe to be the best format for the equation. Note that I use the == operator then .not. it. The not equals operator can operate differently with string comparisons, so .not. a == operator is better for A5 (in my opinion)

The $ operator and it's parameters should have parenthesis around it to make sure A5 interprets it properly. There are times it gets confused with the $ operator

                  .not.(substr(Dhi,1,3)=="GMK").and..not.("-" $ substr(Dhi,1,3))

But you can't use operators anyway you want as you initially did. The is only valid to compare two parameters (of the same type) on the left and right of it. You were using it as a negate function (a unary operator), which is A5's .not.

See ya next month at the A5 Developer's conference!

                    John,

"-" $ substr(Dhi,1,3) is a logical expression that evaluates to either true or false. Another okay expression would have been:

                    "-" $ substr(Dhi,1,3) = .F.
