Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    summary table in wrong location

    I have an application running on a network with all stations optimized. The problem is when the month end process is run from one of the network stations.

    It appears that when the summarize operations are run,the result table is created on the local station, not on the file server, then when the next operation tries to post from the summary table it can't find the table.
    It seems that the directory path can't be added to the summary table.

    Is this correct? I may be looking in the wrong direction but this seems to be what is occuring.

    This can happen when the path of the output file is not explicitly defined. What you do about it depends on whether you are running a saved operation or a summary defined by xbasic.

    To explicitly set the path of the ouput file you need to do something like:
    sum.db=:A5.Get_Path()+"filename.dbf"

      Actually since your are running optimized you need to set the app path to the server (Get_path will return the location of the shadow database).

      I create a global app_path variable at startup. This returns the path to the data whether the app is shadowed or not.

      '====
      dim global app_path as c
      bare_path=:A5.Get_Master_Path()
      if len(alltrim(bare_path))=0 then
      'the database is not shadowed
      app_path=:A5.Get_Path()+Chr(92)
      else
      app_path=bare_path+chr(92)
      end if
      '====

      I can then use app_path anywhere I need to be sure a file should be found or placed in the main app folder such as in your
      sum.db=app_path+"filename"

        Thanks for the info. I knew there was a way, just wasn't quite sure how to set it up.

          I was using a saved operation but converted it to xbasic, now it creates the result table in the correct folder but it is not included in the database so other operation can use it. Following is the code used.

          dim tbl as p
          tbl=table.open(app_path+"chargefile.dbf")
          sum.db = app_path+"tlcharges2.DBF"
          sum.db_dd_delete = .F.
          sum.order = "CUSTID+COMPLEX"
          sum.filter = ""
          sum.options = "I"
          sum.fields = 3
          sum.field1 = "CUSTID"
          sum.code1 = 0
          sum.field2 = "COMPLEX"
          sum.code2 = 0
          sum.field3 = "AMOUNT"
          sum.code3 = 1
          tbl.summarize()

          Now what?

            Add a

            file_add_to_db(app_path+"tlcharges2.DBF" )

            to the end of your script.
            There can be only one.

                I think, having run the summary once (and you have a copy of the output file on the disk) if you add it to the database at that time this will have the same effect as running the file_add_to_db code that Stan suggested.

                YOU need to br sure that you keep the sum.db_dd_delete = .F
                untouched.

                  You are right again. After playing with the summary I found that when the file is in the correct place, added to the database, using the app_path variable will write to the correct location.
