Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    UHHGGG!!!

    Hi! Can someone tell me what I did wrong?? I am running v4.5 on a server. I have a shortcut to this on another computer on the desktop where I create my forms, make changes to the tables, etc. However, when I go to the server to veiw the forms, changes, etc. they are not there. When I go back to my PC, they are there. I need to figure out how to save the changes I make on my desktop to my server as well. What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks!

    RE: UHHGGG!!!

    Carolee,

    It sounds like you have accidentally installed two different versions of your database. One lives on the server, and one lives on the workstation.

    I believe the typical network setup would be something like this:

    1) the Database would be installed in a single folder on the 'server';

    2) the server may or may not have it's own copy of Alpha Five, it's not required unless an operator sitting at the server plans to work with the database. Many would think that's a bad idea;

    3) Alpha Five would be installed on each workstation;

    4) Alpha Five would be started at the workstation, and then the user would File / Open Database and navigate across the network to the server.

    Doing it this way the user at the workstation is working with data in the database on the server, not locally. When any other workstation logs on to the database, across the network, they'll see the changes made at the first workstation.

    Doing it this way will also be slow, perhaps painfully so. Alpha Five include a 'network optimization' feature to overcome this. We can talk more about that once you get the database setup.

    There's an easy way to see the actual 'path' to the database files you are using when you open the database. Just open the Alpha Five control panel, and select the Tables / Sets tab. Then right click on white space inside the Tables / sets tab. Select View off the popup menu, and select Details off the dropdown list. You can now see the Full Path to each table in your database. I expect this will show that your path is pointing to a folder on your workstation, and not on the server, when you open the database at a workstation.

      Tom
      I don't know enough about the network optimization function but have wondered in the past about something. What happens if I have the application on a server and the shadow open on my work station then go into design mode on the shadow and make a change to a form. Will I change the shadow copy or the actual form on the server?
      Thought this might be what can happen in Carolee's case?

        RE: UHHGGG!!!

        Rick,

        Good question. Unfortunately, I don't know. My shadowed applications are using the runtime engine, so changes to the structure of tables, or to the layouts themselves, are not possible.

          RE: UHHGGG!!!

          While I also use the runtime on terminals, I suspect any changes made to forms, reports etc on an optimized terminal will change just that terminal. Using network optimization places local copies of all of the data dictionaries on the local which contain forms, reports, etc. Only the data files (dbf, cdx) are shadowed. When a form is opened on the terminal, you open the form locally and just the data is called from the server, which is why it is so much faster.

            RE: UHHGGG!!!

            If you are running the shadow app and make a change,the change is on the shadow app and you will lose it the next time you refresh or optimize.

              RE: UHHGGG!!!

              Correct, but if you realize you have done this, you can open the shadow application, get to the control panel, select the locally modified layout, copy it, close the shadow application, open the networked application (server copy), get to the control panel, paste the layout (identifying the proper master table or set).
              There can be only one.

                Stan,

                You can also just copy the data dictionary for the table with the modified version over the files for the unmodified. In a set, copy all of the set files(.set,.sex,.sem) On tables, copy the ddm, ddx, ddd. You can copy from the terminal to the server and vice versa.

                  Tom,

                  You were right about the path. It is going to my C drive. I don't understand that, but oh well. How do I take the tables and forms I have on my computer and get them to the server copy?

                  Thanks!

                    Have you done a network optimization as discuss in the tread. When you say that it is on the c drive what is the full path because if it is in a shadow then follow what Stan said to do.

                      When you open your application get to the control panel. In the upper menu bar go to view,settings then you can set your path for the application

                        Rick,

                        Thanks so much for your response! I was able to figure out what I was doing wrong. I was accessing actual data for the tables from my hard drive instead of the server. I updated the server files with my data files instead and everything is working fine.

                          Rick,
                          I do this every day! I modify shadow forms, browses, reports, etc. and xbasic scripts. At the end of the day I copy them to the source table. I have idiot proofed this by copying using "Second Copy" (www.centered.com) which allows you to set up profiles where I filter out the dbf/cdx/fpt/alb files. So only the dictionary files copy back to the source. You cannot change the cdx or structure on the shadow, nor can you change the alb. But otherwise it works great. I have been doing this for over a year with no problems whatsoever!
