Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ODBC

I have tried to Append, Copy, Post and even Summarize an ODBC table of mine, but to NOW AVAIL.

I have managed to get it added to the tables list.
I have queryed it in the default browse view.
The table in question is 68,000 records big.

I have been able to do multiple functions on some of my other tables (ODBC as well) that are only 1000 records.

(the AIX server is running Informix and I have set up ODBC)

    I purchased A5 v4.5 266 because I have used other Alpha
products and I thought it would be a breeze because it can do ODBC.

THe product I was using is COGNOS that uses the same ODBC setup to make reports and such. It didn't seem to have a problem with that table. Unfortunately, COGNOS is limited in other ways. This is why I purchased A5.

I thought Alpha V version 4.5 266 did not have a record size limit? Does it have a limit when it is referring to ODBC tables? By the way my computer is:

AMD 1.4 Ghz 512mb,ecc ram, 40 Gig HD, etc., etc.
(in case the computing power is in question)

Is there a patch for this? I am useing the latest and greatest, as far as I know.....

Has anyone else had problems using ODBC tables?

    THANKS in ADVANCE !!!!

I know someone will come up with a fix or workaround.
There are some really smart people on these boards.
I gathered this from the messages I have read trying to find out the answer to this problem. Before I posted!

If anybody wants help with making a Linux Samba Primary Domain Controller that does Roaming Profiles let me know.
We set ours up AND IT WORKS much better than that stinking
    NTSERVER! Much faster too!

    RE: ODBC

Record quantity is not the problem. I perform the operations you describe on Oracle tables containing 2 million plus records.

Are you getting an error message? Are you coding the operation or using the genie?

Are you posting, etc. to the ODBC linked table or from the table? If posting to the table have you triple checked the permissions?
    There can be only one.

      RE: ODBC

      Burt,

Even though Alpha supports ODBC connections, it doesn't do it all that well. In some cases you can get good results hooking up to one database (e.g. Oracle) while getting absolutely nowhere with a back end such as SQL server.

Part of it is due to ODBC limitations (e.g. not handling long file names in some file formats), while in others, such as SQL Server, the change in field-data types and the database's new (as of 3-4 years ago) unicode support won't jibe with Alpha's connection technology.

If you were primarily looking to Alpha Five as a front end tool to connect with your back end database, keep looking. Unfortunately, Apha can't help you much in this regard; although word is that this shortcoming will be corrected in a future version.

      Best regards,

      Geoff Hollander

        Using the genie.....

Maybe that is where I am having a problem?

Hopefully the new Ver 5 will fix my problems.

I checked the violation.dbf, but nothing is in there.

(I made my own work around...)

(I ram Excel (I HATE M$) and used their M$ Query tool,
made a dbf from that, then I am able to manipulate to my hearts content.)

Did I mention I don't want to depend on M$?

The posting was from the informix table to another table.

Have you tried running Alpha V 4.5 in Wine under Linux?

        I'm going to try soon.

        THanks for your help.

          RE: ODBC

Do you have any NEWS as to when A5 V5 will be released?

I did purchase A5 for just this problem, though.

I figure, if I can create these wonderful reports & then purchase the A5 Unlimited runtime, I can install the App on all of my clients.

BTW have you tried other databases other than M$SQL, Informix or Oracle?

I am thinking along the lines of PostGres, MySql, etc.

          Thanks for your reply!

          Have a great day!
