Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I would like to be able to leave my computer on, in an application, but some how locked up so that no one else can do anything with it. Is there some way to make a form (requiring a password to exit) to cover the whole screen, with no minimize or close buttons, and no alpha nor windows menu bar?

from edit mode set form properties:
    Deselect min/max/system buttons
Set menus & toolbars - each to "none"
Put [b]this.maximize(),/b> in the OnActivate event of the form
Add a button with a password to close the form

That does everything you want. There is more one could do...

Or use the Windows screensaver with a password.

          Conrad,

I don't have an explanation for what my users have experienced, but I would discourage you from leaving the application open for extended periods of time. We've had problems that we attribute to Windows 98 and have better results if we shut down each workstation nightly. (Complete power down.)

If you're thinking of leaving the app running for days on end, and you're using Windows 98, our experience may apply, so I thought I'd mention it.

Also, if you're in a networked environment, leaving your app running on your workstation will block other Alpha Five processes which folks at other workstations may be attempting when those processes require exclusive access to the tables you have open when you walk away from the desk.

Hey all, my app is on timers (all forms) to jump back to the main menu after "x" number of minutes depending on the form. The main menu form is also timed that after 30 minutes of non-use A5 closes completely, and deletes all the .mpx files when doing so. We have about 60 computers inhouse, and usually very few are powered down at night. Since we use a logon/password system the app is secure to non-authorized people to play on it. This also frees up all resources for any processing that may need to take place during the night the require exclusive access.

                Hi Group,

First things first. I am still a novice at A5, but very experienced in
PCs. I find that leaving the PC on for extended periods of time will
often times lock-up the PC. Further examination of this problem has
shown me that as long as ANY application is resident that the problem
is more likely to occur. I have tested many systems and concluded that
when nothing beside the basic operating system is resident that the PC
remains stable. BTW, this includes some of the screensavers that
                destabilize the system.

With the above in mind, I always recommend leaving the power on a PC
indefinitely as long as there are no applications resident. WHY? Think
about when your lightbulbs usually blow out, in more cases than not it
is when you turn the light on. In my opinion it is the sudden current
inrush that causes a thermal shock to the filaments. PCs are no
different, they just have zillions of lightbulbs.
