Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can't edit records in a query.

I don't understand. I ran a query [*any(ln,","] but I can't edit the records the query brings up. What am I doing wrong here?

    Ryan,

What type of query, QBF, QBT, Query Genie or did you run a saved query? Did you run this from a form, default form or a default browse or a browse on a form? I don't know that any of this should make a difference but it might.

      Ryan,

the syntax of your query looks wrong.

Assuming 'ln' is the name of field in your table and
assuming you want to find all records that contain
a comma in the ln field, wouldn't it look like
      this:

      *any(ln,",")

      ???

      -- tom

ps I haven't used *any() with punctuation symbols, like your comma. Will they work?

I just went the 'operations' tab, clicked 'new,' 'Query Records,' chose my table, then chose, "go directly to the query card..." QBT I guess?

That actually is what I used. I just put the whole expression in braces on my post just to show that it was kind of a side note.

Yes, I can bring up records containing punctuation. My problem is I can't seem to edit them directly out of the query. After I close down the query, then go back and browse the table, I can edit them just fine. It's just kind of an annoyance, that's all.

No, this is a saved query operation. If you do this from the control panel it should bring up the default browse for the table involved in the query.

If you close that browse, and then open the default form for the same table the query will remain in effect.

If you're trying to do this in one step we can help.

Yes. I think that's what I'm wanting to do.

When I run the query, I shows the records it found, but won't allow me to edit them. I have to close the query down, then browse the table (with the query still in effect) to edit the records. Is there a way for me to edit the records in a query as soon as it finishes running?

Sounds like something else is going on.

Has your default browse been set to readonly?

Here, when I run a saved query operation the result set is displayed using the default browse for the table and immediate edits are possible.

Describe, specifically, what you are doing, and what you are seeing.

RE: Can't edit records in a query.

I don't even know HOW to set my default browse to read only. If it is set to that, it wasn't me who did it.

Okay, here's exactly what I'm doing:

(I have a dbase file in the 'Tables/Sets' tab.)

From the Control Panel, I click the 'operations' tab, then the 'New' button. The 'New Object' window appears. At this point I choose 'Query Records' from the list, choose my table, then select 'Go directly to the Query card and define your own query operation.' Once in the Query card, I enter "LN" into the 'Field/Expression' column, and
*any(LN,",") into the 'Condition' column. When I click the run button (little lightning bolt), a browse window comes up with the records found in the query. When I try to edit them, it visibly changes, then when I take the cursor out of the field, it changes back. The only way I can edit these records is to close the query windows down, go to 'Tables/Sets' and browse the table from there (the query remains in effect).

I would like to be able to edit the records directly from the query if possible.

Seems like I remember encountering this behavior but I'm not sure I knew what caused it. Is your query created against a table or a set? Is the ln field involved in any field rules?

                    Just trying to remember......

                      Think I found it.

While in design mode for a query operation, before saving, the records can't be edited. If you save the operation and run it, either from the control panel or by code from a button, etc. the records can be edited.

Much like design mode for a new browse. While in design mode, the records can be manipulated by setting order and filter, but not edited. Once you save the browse and change to browse view, you can edit the records.

                        Ryan,

I've confirmed Stan's findings here, using vers. 4.03.

After you define the query, save it. Then close the query builder. Then run the saved query by double clicking on it from the Operations tab of the Control panel.
