Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Runtime

I was wondering if anyone out there had Runtime. I would like to know what your thoughts are on it, and where I can get more info on it. One of the aspects I liked most is that users cannot change your application, but I would like to know how it's handled on the network, with several different users and such. Thanx for your time.

Also if there was any problems with it as well. Thanx.

      From the silver tongued one:

      Msg ID: 52280

      Gil,

In the typical setup, your database would reside in a single folder on a machine in your LAN which you designate as the server. It may or not be an actual server, but most folks get best results if it's a machine which is not used for other purposes during the course of each work day.

Alpha Five may be installed on the 'server' but is not required.

Instead, Alpha Five (or the runtime engine) should be installed on each of the other workstations, all of which need read/write access to the database folder on the server. I find that things work best if the server folder is mapped as a local disk drive, and that the same disk drive designation is used on all workstations.

      (......)

In the typical arrangement there is no local data on the workstation at all. Instead, after cranking up Alpha Five the user should 'open' the database on the server, reaching out across the network to do so. Changes will then be written back to that same location, on the server, and will be visible to others who 'open' the database on the server from their own separate workstations.

There's one drawback to doing it this way. Performance suffers because the bandwidth of the typical connection is too small to easily permit the entire database, all field rules, layout definitions, and the other visual components of the application to be easily and quicly sent to the workstation from the server. To overcome this Alpha Software offers 'network optimization'.

To network optimize one must start A5 on the local workstation; then open the database on the server; then navigate to the A5 control panel, and select File, then Network Optimize. If you accept the defaults the network optimize process will transfer key portions of your database to the local workstation, storing them in a shadow folder. I recommend you accept the defaults. If you don't there's a danger here that you might accidentally save the shadow copies of the database back to the server, thereby accidentally, and permanently, erasing all of your real data. So my personal rule is accept the default path and folder settings that alpha Five suggests.

When this is completed shadow 'copies' of the database are created locally at the same time. Thereafter, if you crank up A5 (on the local workstation) and open the database residing in the local shadow folder on the same machine, Alpha Five will transparently and automatically connect with the actual data on the server. This should be your goal.

      There can be only one.

        RE: Runtime

The runtime works just fine in both single-user and network environments.

As mentioned, it is important to use the optimize feature
for networked applications but this is as true for the full program as for the runtime.

          RE: Runtime

          Hi, Stan.

I am trying to do this Network Optimizing (and it's for my job, so I want to do it correctly :0) ), and I had a few questions.

"I find that things work best if the server folder is mapped as a local disk drive, and that the same disk drive designation is used on all workstations."

I have to admit that I've never done this before! I right-clicked on My Computer and chose "Map Network Drive," chose an unused letter (K:), and then navigated to the folder on the server which contains the database. Is this what you meant?

"To network optimize one must start A5 on the local workstation; then open the database on the server; then navigate to the A5 control panel, and select File, then Network Optimize."

Two clarifications requested: "...then open the database on the server..." Will this work if I open the database on the server from the workstation which I am trying to optimize?

2.: "...then navigate to the A5 control panel..." This one has me stumped. Can you give me directions, please?

          Thank you so much!

That is exactly what you want to do

-"...then navigate to the A5 control panel..."

Unless you application blocks access to the control panel you need only press the control panel icon on the toolbar. If the developer has blocked access then you may need a password.
