Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

And we've all heard, by now, how wonderful, and secure, xp is.

xp sure is getting it's bell rung.

We old Dos Batch file writers are going by the wayside fast and it's just as well. I am one of the believers that the few dos strings left in windows will soon pass into oblivion.

        RE: dos (was html)

I have XP Pro, and there IS a command line available. And all my dos batch files work. Also, XP has help available for bat files as good or better than 6.22 did!

One difference, though, is that with 98/ME to call a batch file from Alpha with a long file name I had to create a short cut to it to use the long file name, but with XP I don't have to.

Like an office name is "Sherry Lane" and the bat file is "Sherry LaneDaily.bat" with 98/me I have the bat file "close on exit" which automatically creates a bat file shortcut called "Sherry~1.bat". Then I rename the shortcut to "Sherry LaneDaily", and when I call it from Alpha it fires the shortcut and runs minimzed. But with XP, I just put an exit as the last line, and call it with the full name.

I'm not sure how many of the old dos features are still available, but I can say for sure that the commands attrib, md, copy, and del are still alive and well!

          Martin,

I was told there is one thread for all dos applications in XP and next version of Windows will have NO threads for dos apps.

I am not sure how this (if true) will affect dos apps, but seems they may not run too good?

            Hi Dave,

I think that is probably true for "dos apps", per se. There's a lot of stuff that won't work anymore. But my main fear was whether I could still use batch files, set attributes, etc. I'm not skilled enough to work with Windows API and/or to create exe files with another language to do a lot of the work I do with batch files to copy, md, attrib, etc. But maybe the next versions of windows will always give us comparable utilities.

But DOS is definitely dead, for all practical purposes. I've only been in Windows at all since about December 1998, when my client said he wanted to finally abandon 6.22 and move up to Windows, since his vendors required it. And that's how I got into Alpha. My last language wouldn't run under 95 and above.
