Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    copy field content

    CTL + Shift + F is supposed to copy data from the same field in the previous record into the current record. It doesn't work the way I understand it. It copies the data from the last record that was entered into the table, not the previous record you were in. I'm looking for something like "Control '" in ACCESS which truly copies the data from the previous record into the current record. I know this has been discussed before but I couldn't find anything in a search.

    RE: copy field content

    if it is a single table, not a set, you can write a short
    button script like this one:

    t_name=table.current().name_get()
    t=table.open(t_name)
    data=table.current().record_data_get()
    t.enter_begin()
    t.record_data_set(data)
    t.enter_end(.t.)
    t.close()

    for a more complex example, and for a discussion of the
    xbasic behind this script, look at

      RE: copy field content

      Bob,

      I have the following (provided by another board member)on my form's OnKey event:

      if a_user.key.value = "{F12}"
      a_user.key.handled = .T.
      sys_send_keys("{CTRL-SHIFT-F}")
      '{ENTER}")
      'sys_send_keys("{RIGHT}")
      end if

      This works great. Better tha Access as you only have to press theF12 key.

        RE: copy field content

        Wow. You guys are up early this morning. You're also too used to doing programming. Please note that I am working in a browse of a single table. Quite often I want to change the content of a field to be the same as that in the same field of the previous record in the browse. I'm not necessarily adding new records. In ACCESS, one just presses CTRL ' and the contents are copied from the previous field.

          Ken:
          i use this type of script also and it works well on a single computer.
          Do you know of anything that will work on a network where multiple people are entering data at the same time.
          Could this pick up user 2 data, instead of the record that user 1 wanted.

            RE: copy field content

            I don't have time to work it out right now but I think this could be done with a little Xbasic which uses the current index to find the previous record.

            However, I find it easier to just use Ctrl-C to copy and Ctrl-V to paste. OK, it's two keystrokes but it saves all the Xbasic programming. (On the other hand, I'm aware of the difficulty involved with getting others to stay away from the stupid mouse and use the keyboard on seemingly simple things like this. Some people claim they can't remember something as complex as Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V even though they can remember the phone numbers for 25 friends.)

              Charlie,

              Well, isn't that interesting? I'm on a single computer so never thought it wouldn't work with the database on the server and the server being accessed by more than one user at the same time. They're all using the same form. I'm not the Xbasic genius but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I take it, for some reason, it only allows one user at a time to be the copy cat.

              How about putting it on a button? A bit unhandy cause I don't like jumping back and forth from the keys to the mouse, but it should work. (Unless there is a limitation as above)

                RE: copy field content

                Are you saying that if I go into the field I want to copy and do a ctrl c and then go into the any field of another record (providing they're the same type) and press ctrl v, that will do what I want to do?
