Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    BitMap Puzzler ???

    Hi:

I've been using Alpha Five for years and until today, I've never seen the annoying littel problem I currently have [using ver 4.5]. I'm sure there is a simple explanation.

I have a bitmap file that I placed in the same folder as all of the data files. I also created four reports, invoice, order confirmation, etc. that all use the same bitmap file at the top of the report The file looks great on all of the reports.

However, when I copied the files to another computer, only 1 of the 4 bitmaps worked on those same four reports. All four reports are using Stretch mode and every setting is identical. In fact, I copied the bitmap file setting from the one report where it worked and pasted it in to the other 3 reports thinking that would resolve the problem, however, it did not help.

In sum, I have four reports on my computer where the same bitmap file works perfectly. When copying the data files to a different computer, the same exact bitmap works properly on only one of the four reports. In the other 3 reports, we can see only red and black lines from the bitmap, but no image.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Robert

Sounds like a memory problem. Check the video memory or video card.
Check the size of the bitmap file. Try a smaller bitmap file on
the problem machine. With wysiwyg it might even be the use of
a different printer but my guess would still be memory in whatever
    device is causing the problem.

      RE: BitMap Puzzler ???

      Hello Tom:

I'm confident it isn't a memory or video card problem because the computer where the bitmap isn't working has a 32mb video card and 256 mb of ram on board. In addition, the only application running was A5. And I originally found out about this bitmap problem when I sent it to someone else who has 128 mb of ram on their system and they complained to me.

And if it was memory Tom, why does it work properly with ALL of the forms and one report, but not in other reports? I tried making the bitmap smaller and/or larger to no avail. Once again, the same exact bitmap file with identical settings is on a variety of forms where it works flawlessly. And it works in some, but not all reports, and each report is part of the same Invoice Set, so that shouldn't be a factor.

As I said before, this is truly bizarre.

      Robert

        Just out of curiosity...

...does it show up properly on the screen preview or is that corrupted too?

...what happens if you remove the stretch?

create a report on any table and put 1 field in the detail section. Put your bitmap file in the header and print/preview. If it works ok, you have a corrupt report, or corrupt data within the report. The other thing to check is the screen res being used by the computers in question. Sometimes a bitmap file won't show/print properly in certain resolutions.
          good luck

            Paul:

I haven't yet tried John L.'s suggestion, but your idea of removing the stretch property was so intriguing that I gave it a shot. I removed the stretch, it didn't help so I actually tried every setting to no avail.

I can see the bitmap perfectly when I'm in Report Design Mode. The image becomes corrupt only when in Print Preview Mode. I haven't actually tried sending the report to the printer itself yet, guess that's nextm but I don't expect it work.

            Thanks,
            Robert

              RE: BitMap Puzzler ???

              Hi John:

I tried your suggestion, I created a simple report with only one or two fields and it worked, the bitmap displayed correctly. However, I don't see the correlation between having a corrupt report [what constitutes a corrupt report?] and a correct display of the bitmap.

What's even more confusing John, is the fact that all four bitmaps work perfectly on my computer. So if the cause of the bitmap display problem is a corrupt report, then those same reports, along with the flawed bitmap object, should occur on my computer since I'm using the same allegedly corrupt reports. But that does not happen as they all work properly.

                Hi Robert,

I have had more than 1 case where there was a considerable difference between print and print preview.

                  Robert:

Do all the reports have the "use default printer" property set and if so, does the new computer have the same printer? It could be that a different printer could cause this if the bitmap is positioned slightly differently in the various reports?

                  Regards

                    Glen:

You solved the problem!!! But now I feel like an idiot because in retrospect, the resolution seems so obvious.

Yes Glen, all four reports were using the "Default Printer", but the printer assigned to each computer was differen, that was the key and I missed it. With that in mind, I went into the report properties and increased the Top and Bottom margins from .05 to .07 and voila, the problem was resolved as the Bitmap file showed up perfectly in every single report.

Thanks to everyone who chipped in, but Glen, I owe you a very special thank you !!!
