Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Query buttons quit working....

I have a number of different applications that use buttons on a screen to run a saved query. I have been having problems with several of them lately in that the query will not run when the button is pressed. I test the query in the control panel and they all work perfectly, but will not work at all when placed on a screen, even if the screen is a brand new layout and the button is newly created. Without the query buttons, some of the applications are useless! Any ideas what may be happening?

    Bobby,

If the saved query you are trying to run was created using the Query Operation it's likely you're having trouble because the table or set used in the query operation is already open. Is this the kind of query you are referring to in your message?

Yes, Tom, that is exactly what I'm trying to do. Can you not perform a query on a table or set that is open? I was not aware that was an issue....

        Bobby,

It's likely your saved query operation uses a script which tries to open the table or set using its actual name. If the button which runs the saved query operation is located on a form which is based on the same table or set, that table or set is already open. (It opened when you loaded the form.) The script fails because it can't open a table or set which is already open.

There are two widely known solutions to this problem:

        1) Use the low level script recorder to capture the saved query operation script, and then modify it so that it uses the 'current' table or set, instead of trying to open another instance of it.

        or

        2) Create a new form, based on a different table and use it to hold the button which runs the saved query operation. Remember it's easy to create a dummy table, and base such a form on it, instead of your actual data tables.

Tom, thanks for the suggestions, but neither worked. The low level script showed it was calling the current database rather than trying to open another instance. I could place the query button on a different form, but that would make the use of the query much more clumsy. Instead, I created buttons that use the "find" command and they work even better than the query did. I'm still at a loss as to the reason my query buttons won't work when they did when I created the form!
          Thanks for you help, though.
