Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    unique append

    Hi Phorum,

Does unique only and unique, replace existing in an append operation
really work? I have tried this so many times, looking for a mistake I might have made, yet when I try to append an existing table of the same name and
structure that has all of the same records plus a few more (it's the
few more that I am after), it appends every record and I wind up with
duplicate records. I don't see any difference between all, unique
only or unique, replace existing, when I run the operation.

    thank you,
    efs

    RE: unique append

Unique and Unique, replace work for me.

Your obstacle might be the linking key. This determines what a unique record is.
    There can be only one.

      RE: unique append

Sounds a bit familiar. The answer was in the query.order, which need to be an existing index. Actually I recall that it needed to be the primary index, but that isn't what my scripts show.

        RE: unique append

As Stan pointed out, you have to define what makes a record unique by defining the linking key. You can use just one field, or several (i.e., JOB_NO+CUST_NO).

A word of warning: If the master table (the one to which you are appending) does not contain a record with a certain value (i.e., "101") in a field, and the transaction table (the one to be appended to the master) has more than one record with that value, ALL records with "101" will append to the master. This is a glitch in the append operation, and Alpha is aware of it.

          7ZNJABB,

I do this all the time with no problems. The advice here is good -- make sure that your respective keys truly correspond.

By the bye, I almost never use indexes since Alpha can create them on the fly for most data operations; so that hasn't affected the outcome for me one way or the other.

Silly question, I know, but you have entered expressions for both the Master and Transaction tables, right?

Oh, and one other thing... What is your name????????????

          Best regards,

            RE: unique append

            Hi Stan,

The table in question only has 3 fields and I use all 3 to link. BTW,
I have 7 different appends in this app for 7 different tables, all are
set to "unique only", the other 6 work properly.
            Thank you,

              Hi UJ,

I am not using an expression on either table, only an index using all
3 fields, the only filtering I need is "unique only" and as I reported
earlier, there are 6 other appends in the app, all made the same way
only using different tables. The other 3 work ok.

              Thank you,
              efs

BTW, my name is Edward F. Schulz, but I will answer to Ed. (7 on

                RE: unique append

                Hi Phorum,

This is a follow-up on this peculiar problem. The goal here is to
receive an attachment by email that supposedly has additionl records
entered at a different office and append it to the receiving office
table. In the beginning, using "unique only", it would append all
records which resulted in many duplications of records.

I examined the table in both the native table as well as the email
table closely for differences, field name, char length, character
type, spelling, you name it. They were identical. The next step, I
copied the email attachment table over top of the application table and
it solved the problem. Keep in mind that I am by no means an A5
proficionado, but I would like to know a reasonable explanation of why
this solution was successful, moreover, I am worried that it can
                reoccur.

Attached is a copy of the append operation, bear in mind, I did not
make any changes from the original that did not work.

                Thank you for reading,
