Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    screen locks up

I have a client with a peer to peer network with 7 stations. One station has the full version (4.03) and the rest has runtime (4.03). About once a week the screens lock up with the hourglass displayed and the system has to be rebooted, after a database compact everythibg work fine for about a week.

Could this be the fault of ver 4.03? There does not seem to be anything else constant when this happens, different users, different time.

    Any ideas??

    RE: screen locks up

    Lloyd,

You've asked a good question, and I'll be monitoring for other ideas. In the meantime, my suggestion would be to investigate whether the lockups are happening on workstations that are multi-tasking large applications? Wherever possible I encourage my users to run Alpha Five, and nothing else. You'd be surprised at all the stuff they try to juggle simultaneously, and often with underpowered systems.

I tell them that if they think the data they're storing in Alpha Five is important, their data entry folks need to limit their activity to Alpha Five... don't multi-task with other Windows applications during data entry sessions, is my personal rule.

      Lloyd,

Another thing to check is the integrity of the customer's LAN.

Is Alpha Five the only app that's running over the local network? If so, occasional lockups might signal a faulty connection, or substandard network interface cards.

Have power surges been ruled out?

        RE: screen locks up

        Lloyd,
A5v4.5's indexes are considerably more stable than your current Alpha version, however there is nor guarantee that it would solve your problem.I agree with Tom that a likely culprit is the network itself. The only thing worse than a dead NIC is a wounded NIC. If there is absolutely no pattern to the problem, one thing you might try is changing the NIC on the machine where the app is stored. By and large, sharing data among 7 users on a peer to peer network will be considerably less stable than a server based network. Is the app stored on a machine that is also being used as a client?? Is the app optimized?? This is only my opinion of course, but if you have a busy application on a 7 user peer to peer network with all machines simultaneously accessing the data, you are lucky you only get one problem per week.

Thanks for all the ideas. There was a new electrical service installed 2 weeks ago (I thought this might fix the problem). Each station is probably using more than one app at a time but I think A5 is the only one used on the network to any great extent.
I will keep trying to get them to upgrade the network and to v5.
          Thanks

You don't mention whether you have run network optimization.

It is running with the program optimized. Never seem to remember to include all the info (old age).

                Lloyd,

I have noticed that computers which are not shut down daily have a problem with memory "leakage".

After closing a program, Windows often fails to free up all of the memory the program used, and if you check your system resources (Start | Settings | Control Panel | System | Performance | System Resources) you will notice that over the period of a few days, the resources will diminish, even when no applications are being run.

If the system resources falls below 60%, some computers tend to lock up rather quickly. Restarting the computer will return the system resources level to the original amount. I have also noticed that when MS Offices installs Fast Find and OSA (two totally worthless items)in the start-up folder, computers lose resourses rapidly. I always remove these from the clients' start-up folder.

                Hope this helps.

                Regards,

Also, TSRs SUCK up memory. Who knows what someone has put on their computer/s and each one can be different. I have to wonder what effect programs like Norton Utilities cause if the various features are set to run in the background. I set up my email for auto scan. After that, everything is manual as I've had lockup problems in the past with Norton.

After all the ideas presented in this thread, the customer decided to go with a server. Is there any major differences in the way a5 will need to be installed or maintained with a server vs a peer to peer network.

                        Lloyd,
Not really. Once you set up the appropriate permissions on the network for users, simply move the entire folder with the app to the server. Hopefully you do have the app in one folder. You'll have to reoptimize the client machines. You should see an increase in both speed and data reliabiliy.
