Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    sets using same child twice.

    To Peter Greulich,

Would you pls expound your suggestion.
    Thanks for you help 1/12/2001.
In Portugal we have difficulty reading attachments sometimes, I guess due to accent settings etc. I couldnt read yours.
I got the three tables set up, and working in a set. It works for the first machine only. I suppose I am not getting something simple,
    a) what is the purpose of the linking table? In our case, at least, the machine number is the linking field. Thus both of the fields in the linking table will be the same for each record - why have it?
    b) You say the second field of the linking table should have table lookup field rule of the machines table, machine ID field. what is that supposed to do?
    c) most baffling to me, how is the info of the second (and 3rd,4th,etc)machine number required supposed to get from the contract table to anywhere.

I can see the concept of using lookup rules instead of sets to get over this problem of using the same child db more than once, but isnt that getting away from the idea of a relational database altogether?

Maybe I have not explained myself.
We write a contract, it has one client, who can rent several different machines.
We have a file of clients. We have a different file of machines.
In the main contract table we have, for example simplified, 3 lines:
-client number: to call the client details, no problem, a one-to-one link to the client table.
-first machine number: to call the first machine from the machine list table.
-second machine number: to call the second machine from the same machine list table as above.

From your info, the second machine number in the contract doesnt do anything, and therefore doesnt work.
    Thanks again for your help.

    Brian.

RE: sets using same child twice.

    brian,

I am not sure what your past conversation was, but:

You can make a set and use a child table several times:
1 parent field for each occurance of the child table

I have not successfully used the master table with the master as a child. I can do this with VB.

You can also use a parent child with multiple child records. You can have a child table with all the sales/rentals and create another table with all the payments made and total to get balances.

I am not sure what you are tryig to do, but would be willing to help with my limited knowledge.

    Dave

I'll try this again. Down load the attachment and extract it to a separate folder. Than run the rental.adb it does just what you want to do. I have used the same child linked to the parent without problem many times. I added a second lookup to the second child in this zip file. So don't use the old one. Just try it. It has worked for me for years. These files were pulled from my rental application. I just made a simple form for demonstration. We are working on preparing our application for sale but it will be some time before it is ready.

I have been away for a few days, I will respond to you when I get a few minute.

FYI: It is better (in the future) to use the same thread for the same subject matter. I always keep the "Latest Reply" column of the Message Board set to "Sort Desc" - which, paradoxically, will leave the label of "Sort Asc" displayed. That way, you always see the most recent posts on top, regardless if they are a new post or a response to an old post.
