Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Life in the world of giant forms

Hi everybody, after working on this app all summer with the laptop on my lap in the shade of a tree in front of a lake. Every function worked, I put my son on trying to crash the thing a few times....I was ready to deliver!

When I loaded it on the clients' screen everything got magnified by a factor of 5. The forms were HUGE. I had to scroll across two screens to view the width of the screen, likewise up and down. After mopping up the puddle of water at my feet I continued the demo on my laptop. Luckily the app performed to their satisfaction and we all got drunk afterwards.

What should I have done to have avoided this. Has anyone experienced this or am I a real dope?

    Greg,

I would assume ( bad word ) your screen size was wrong? I always make my apps conform to 800*600. It seems to always work unless the customer is blind and using 640*480, in which case I provide a pair of readers and reset his screen.

XP defaults to 800*600, you have to work at getting 640*480

OK, I loaded Alpha on a system with a 14 inch screen at 800X600 resolution and judging from the ruler on top the width of the screen is 8 inches and the height is almost 5 inches. So if I set my forms to be a maximum of this size I shouldn't have any problems. I suppose forms would only partially fill the screen on a system with a 17 inch monitor.

        Greg,

Hi. Keep in mind that the size of the monitor itself doesn't have a lot to do with your problem. You can correct this as you said above - by setting the resolution to the lowest common denominator you choose to be your application's minimum required resolution, and then size a blank form to fill it up. (You might want to size it down a bit from there, in fact.)

Once this is done, and you have saved your form, you can set your resolution back to the settings with which you usually like to work (I have mine typically set to 1600 x 1200, so I can sympathize with your plight).

When you open the design view of that form in your new, higher resolution setting you will see both in actual size and inches (via the rulers) how big your maximum form size can be from now on.

The Visual Basic Editor has a little window with a representation of a monitor that has dotted lines showing the maximum display size of various resolutions. Whenever you create a form, it's represented on that little monitor; growing and shrinking proportionately as you change the size of the form.

Using this handy litte window, you can set your form instantly for whatever resolution you wish. I hope that someday Alpha Five will include something like this in its code editor.

        Best regards,

        Geoff Hollander

I think there is an article at learn alpha about changing screen sizes automatically.
