Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Virus Alert ...

I'm sure all you savvy A5 users out there keep your virus definitions updated and your anti-virus software set to automatically scan your e-mail before you open it ...

In any event, keep an eye out for an e-mail from a vaguely familiar name (someone who frequents this board periodically) with just a
    RE:
    in the subject line.

This e-mail has an e-mail virus/worm (W32.BadTrans.b) attached and you should delete the message and attachment.

I won't mention the person's name since I'm sure they had no intention of deliberately sending the message. It's also possible that the name was simply purloined from another Outlook e-mail directory and plonked into the "From" line of the message. Either way it looks like it could go around the Alpha community.

At least one other Alpha user has received this one. Apparently you don't have to open the attachement for the worm to do its damage, so be sure to set your AV software to quarantine e-mail attachments.

        Finian,

I've gotten 3 so far from different A5 users, however, all of them have no attachments. I'm confused as to why the attachments are not there (I use Netscape e-mail), but happy about it.

I couldn't see the attachments - I use Netscape too - but Norton said they were there, but quarantined. Maybe they don't show because the thing is designed to sneak through the IE security flaw that allows the worm to execute without the attachment being opened. I was not aware until today that this could happen.

I've receive 2 additional e-mails since the first post.

Ah! The joys of AOL. You can make fun of AOL all you want but at least it doesn't download any attachments unless I want it to.

Thanks for the heads up. My switch for email scanning was off. I reset it, checked my email and there was W32.BadTrans.b on a new item from the same vaguely familiar alpha fellow.

Sadly, the person sending the virus probably doesnt even know it. Th virus has the ability to send itself.

Norton AV 2002 scans incoming mail and outgoing mail for viruses. If the sender had this there would be no discussion.

You guys make it sound like you know who "the sender" is... Can you email them directly if you are too polite to name them publicly?

I worry is it me - but I have Norton AV 2001 updated and running, and I use Compuserve, not Outlook (the main reason I DON'T use Outlook is it such a target for viral abuse) Bizarre - I went for years with NO protection, have had an always on DSL line for a couple years now, put Norton AV on about two months ago and it found the SirCam virus which was maybe a week on my machine... Otherwise I was clean (Norton clean, that is), it caused ME no problem, and I have never HAD a problem, knock on wood.

It's different people. I had the worm for five minutes today and have no idea how many copies I sent out. People who received copies from me say this is the tenth or 20th this week and no others were from Alphapholk.
