Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Newbee Help

I'm sure this is a stupid question. On a customer list I want to add a box so that a e-mail address can be added on entry. I add the box in design, then when an address is added, I get an error message "address not found"

    Anybody have any ideas?

I'm new to this program, never did anything like this, in fact the program I was using was Q&A.

    Louis,

You should verify that the email address field has been added to the structure of your table. Then check to verify that there are no field rules defined for the email address field. (You can add them later after you get more familiar with the program).

Then open the form in design mode. Choose the Drag/Drop list off the View manu. Then drag the field from the Drag/Drop list and drop it on your form.

Save the form. Enter and change a few records. The new email address field should behave like the other fields on the form.

      Louis,

Only STUPID question is one not asked.

Adding - the field for the email address should be a character field about 40 characters long.

        RE: Newbee Help

        Dave,

There are stupid questions (like ones that are easily found in the documentation by looking at the table of contents or indexes or by a simple search of the message board of the keyword given in the question). Also there are trivial questions (like how many nubs are on a standard basketball), but that's a whole 'nuther issue!

As to the length of the e-mail field, it should be somewhere between 75 and 100 characters in length. 40 is easily exceeded by many people's work addresses.

              Hi Lou,

I'd say your question was naive, not stupid. And you qualified yourself as a newbee, so it was forewarned.

But always try to look for the obvious when you can.

One other thing that I don't think Geoffrey pointed out was that the disk versions of the manuals (I particularly prefer the adobe acrobat format) can be searched for a word that may not be in the index. If the word is not too common, it can be found in short order. This is why I almost always never use a printed manual. I just have one window with the manual and another with A5.

                Lou,

Just for the record did you solve your problem? Was Tom correct in his diagnosis?

While we're at it, I work in the classroom and I didn't think your question was stupid. If you were to ask it 10 more times one might be forced to reconsider but you are unlikely to do that.

On thing about databases is that you do have to work with the documentation. Many people are lead astray by the word processor expectations they bring to databases. Perhaps this was so in your case.

So feel free to keep asking (but also read).

I guess Tom was right. I deleted what I had and tried again following his instructions and it worked.

                      Ira,

The word version has the same ability to search a word. I prefer the word edition for other reasons though.

I do disagree with you on the stupid question issue, I have searched the printed version a few times and came here for help to have the page pointed out to me. Also the " only stupid/dumb question is one not asked" is taught in every University and High School in America.

                      Thanks

I didn't say it didn't. Problem I find with the word version is that it's pagination is sensitive to the selected printer, and doesn't cache it's pages, meaning searches are longer. Plus, if you bring up Word (as opposed to a word viewer) it hogs alot of main memory. But to each his own. It's nice that both are available.

I do disagree with you on the stupid question issue, I have searched the printed version a few times and came here for help to have the page pointed out to me.
Well if you searched the document 1st, then it was not "easily found" and you have at least made an effort. There are many that don't even look, and that's what make's a question "Stupid". While complex, multi-word searches are often less than obvious, a single word search should always be done before asking a question.

Also the " only stupid/dumb question is one not asked" is taught in every University and High School in America.
And while on the surface, that is not basically wrong, it referring to the proposition of the question, not to whom it is addressed (which could be one's self). It should not be imparted on other students or teachers until you've asked yourself the question and taken some steps to come to an answer (whether or not you actually get the answer). Then you can present your question in a more enlightened way, and perhaps share your answer for others to learn from.

Part of the problem in many schools today are that the students want all the information delivered to them on a silver (golden?) platter, without doing the groundwork.

Perhaps that's why in a recent quiz show John F Kennedy was believed to be stationed on an aircraft carrier during World War II. One of the most famous presidents in recent times, with books and Hollywood movies about his life, and kids (adults too) still don't know the basics.

                          Anyway, that's my take!
